I believe my tunes are ready to be performed and I am looking into buying a nice setup. My buddy is willing to sell me two vestax pdx-2000s and a numark mixer for $500, i have another friend that will give me a serato box and all of the cables that i need for free, should i jump on it before somebody else buys it?

or should i save a bit longer and buy two numark cdjs (forgot the model, around $200 each) and a cheapish mixer for $900?

is vinyl or cdjs better for dubstep?

These days vinyl is extra, I say go with the Cdjs. There are so many quality producers that you automatically miss out on by going vinyl only.

Shit, you're gonna get serato for free? Take the vestax decks. Don't know anything about 'em, but my experience with numark cdjs has also not been pleasant. That price is killer for the entireeee setup.

That is a mint deal. Heard good things about vestax tables too. Id say go for vinyl its expensive but if youve got serato then problem solved.

I'm not a DJ, but I will say that as it is vinyl is becoming less and less available. There's also the fact that if you go vinyl you will have to spend the money to have your own stuff pressed onto vinyl as well. Most labels releasing dubstep tend to be very selective on their vinyl selections as they need to make sure they are going to sell. You'll still get quality tracks on vinyl, but a lot of stuff you will want to play probably will never see a vinyl press which really sucks.

I don't see an issue with going vinyl, but you'll probably want to invest in CDJs at some point as well. Or you can go the Skrillex route and grab a copy of ableton, a laptop and a Trigger Finger.

There's not a better or worse set up just depends what your comfy on. I know if I was getting a free serato box i'd snap that shit up in the blink of an eye.

As a DJ who does have experience playing out. I'd genuinely start avoiding vinyl. Don't get me wrong I love vinyl, I learned on vinyl and if I ever get the choice it is vinyl all day every day... But the world of vinyl is dying unfortunately, any place you play out 95% of them won't have turntables, just CDJs. Half the tunes I want nowadays don't get vinyl releases, infact some don't get physical releases at all.

If I had the choice to buy new pair of Technics (<3) or Pioneer/Dennon CDJ's I'd have to go with the CDJ's nowadays.

if you are gonna go vinyl just get technics, ive heard people say over and over again, that you may aswell save up for technics cos your just gonna end up buying them anyway. i would rather prefer to get vinyl, and learn on vinyl and then move to cdjs, cos it would be hard to go the other way round, and if you get serato too then thats best of both worlds really, and all you need to do is get a bit of practice on someone else CDJS and then if the vinyl setup in a club is shit, just use CD with serato instead.

i dont get what you mean by this, if you mean some quality producers dont release vinyl, well all the quality stuff i want is on vinyl. if you are goin the brostep route then you dont want vinyl, cos most of it isnt released on vinyl. but then again you said you get serato too, so then you dont even need to buy vinyl, you can have all your music on the laptop, whilst djing like you have vinyl.

technics are out of production and going for nearly 1k each these days. vinyl as a connoseiur's medium of choice is healthy; vinyl as a DJ tool is nearly done.

These view-points are tired, and IMO silly. There are literally hundreds of excellent tracks out there that are not on vinyl, and a whole lot of average tracks that are on vinyl. There are plenty of tracks that are "good enough to press", they just aren't. Vinyl is on the way out and there are many many good tracks that do not get pressed. If "all the quality stuff you want is on vinyl" then it sounds to me like you are a sheep following the cool crowd. Why limit your horizons like that?

they signed too many shit labels and pressed up too much shit tunes

also go decks and serato then you have the best of both worlds OP

mate i dont buy pure vinyl, but most of the stuff i like does come out on vinyl, doesnt mean i buy it all. theres also a whole lot of shit tracks that are released digitally. i would say please give me a list of tunes that are good and arent on vinyl, but i know there will be good tracks. i dont limit my horizons, i buy more digital tracks than vinyl, but to dj i would like to learn how to do it with vinyl and then move from there. im sorry you think im a sheep, but i buy music that i like, not cos someone else likes it!

I don't get where you're having to make a decision, wether you get serato+TT's or CDJ's they're both digital. Get serato and the vestax TT's because it's cheaper and just play your tunes digitally as you would have on CDJ's. Now you won't have to burn CD's, you can mix vinyl as well, and if you ever have to mix on another setup having come from turntables you'll be ahead of the game.
