"maximalism"

This year i was on a kick where I'd ram tunes full of as many ideas as possible. Multiple melodies at the same time sort of thing. Lots of shit happening. I enjoy it, I completely ignored worrying about getting the mixdowns sounding crisp. However I'm well aware that people can get into less cluttered music easier, are more likely to remember it, etc.

The only problem with this approach is that I burned out lol, I'm listening to melodies that could themselves work as whole tunes, but I used as just some random moment in a more "messy" tune. Haven't made a tune a few months now (due to other reasons of course)

Then I read some article in one of these blogs (I think it was p4k) about music coming out that runs contrary to the whole "less is more" idea, described as "a.d.d" and shit. Interesting article even it was very p4ky, but got me thinking that perhaps there's an actual audience for beats where everything but the kitchen sink got thrown in the track. Obviously there is an audience...

Lol got no clue where I was going with this. More of a rant than a question or whatever. Anyone go for a cluttered, messy, a.d.d vibe?

I read that same article - very interesting, I know of minimalism but I had never heard the term maximalism - it's true though, the emerging EDM trend en ce moment IS maximalist. I started out very into the sound, but, just as you say you did, "burned out." Basically your description happened to me as well - now I'm into the minimalist stuff, pretty much hate most maximalized shit.
That's why I think that this is only a passing trend. People will burn out.
If you cram someone's head full of too many ideas, it gets to a point where people say "enough."
Minimalism just opens up a lot more doors, while maximalism closes them, IMO.

Pendulum is kinda like that except they fill the whole frequency spectrum rather than tons of melodies. I love it but I think they've caught flack from critics for it.

There's certainly a market for it. Would you call apex twin maximalist?

I like some Pendulum...there's definitely a time and a place for maximalism, it's not necessarily a bad thing - it's just when it turns from maximalist music to "filthy" noise is when it gets shitty.

Is aphex twin maximalism? I dunno, you know, he's got all of these really tightly packaged click'n'cut songs, the whole rapidfiredrum IDM stuff, but it still kind of hollow, if you know what I mean? It just a lot of stuff, not stuff there for the sake of filling everything up. When you spoke about maximalism I thought more in the lines of complextro.

Yeah I think complextro is the ultimate maximalism.

Nah complextro is just what it sounds like.

REALLY REALLY messy electro house.

Wikipedia describes Skrillex's style as complextro.

If you listen to his remix of Alejandro by Lady Gaga (lol I know right) the "drop" in that is complextro.

Yuck.

This. Listen to this. then you'll get it. I personally hate this absolute nonce for ruining a great Buju Banton tune for me :/ this is more "maximal" in the drum sense.

I found the same thing recently in my tunes I have way to many things going on that just clutters the mix. Instead of more just make what u have better. I can't imagine the talent and perfectionism it takes to make GOOD complextro\purple or whatever. Skrillex just hurts after awhile... check out muscle rollers by feed me. That is maximalism at its finest. Note good maximal artists don't jam pack all there songs.

Couldn't have put it better my friend. :W:

I agree with all of this. Maximalism isn't all bad, feed me gives it a good name - and again, agree with the fact that skrillex just hurts - feed me's sound is somehow a lot more classy.

And yeah, there's no denying the production skill going into a complextro song that flows well is immense.

Only if were talking about the good 0.002%.

Drukqs is like "Maximalism" vs "Minimalism", "Piano" vs "Computer", "Human" vs "Machine", and after a few listen you realize there are no winners, its just all so fucking good :D

Do we really want to start this? You should know on this forum that people love to rage (it is kinda fun though i gotta admit)

just start a new thread titled "tunes that suck" and you'll have a huge reply base faster than you can say "skrillex"

I think "maximalist" shit like Skrillex is gonna burn out here real fast...I think pretty soon theres going to be a lot more minimal artists making it big in the scene. Recently, I've been following SBTRKT...he's pretty damn minimal and chill I'd say, but he's playing on festivals and stuff now...

For me personally, I think maximal dubstep is a fad, more than anything.
