SOPA and DSF?

Is anyone concerned that the fact that we all could get royally screwed by this Bill...
I mean dubstepforum could get blacklisted! :o

Clubland, Soundcloud, Facebook, Youtube and all the other blogs that support artists can get blacklisted for pretty much any content they showcase
kinda messed up that all the music we listen to on websites can just disappear because someone is pointing the finger at websites like this one :(

Im completely against this because it directly effects my long line of work (Mixes and remixes as well) as potential reason to be blacklisted
and in some cases sued! I really don't agree with the fact that politicians that barely understand the bill are the ones that are deciding it.
Im sure we would all hate for websites that support music like Dubstep and Drum n Bass get taken away because it would ultimately be the
death of this genre in the internet and music sharing. We would never find any new music or discover any classics that are well past our time. It would suck
to see the only publicized dubstep/house artists to be Skrillex and Deadmau5 because of their label and copyright protection.

Im sure many of you guys have some opinion about it, and if you dont know what it is heres a video explaining it.

Please say whatever you think, i dont want this to happen but what about you guys. what you think?

SOPA & PIPA really really scare me. At this point though, and as a Canadian, I don't feel like there's much I can do to help you guys out. I feel for you guys so bad.

The Bills as currently proposed will not pass congress. Already some of the more contentious parts are being removed and watered down. The DNS removal provisions for one, in both sopa and pipa (as of yesterday). While something may eventually pass , i suspect it will be a drastically watered down version if anything at all. its still somewhat frightening that us lawmakers thought they would just be able to slip this under the radar, and will it get watered down enough?

to the op: even without all these sites , you cant keep music down.... theyre wasnt any internet invlovled when i got into electronic music (around 1993) but we still found a way to find great independant music, frankly it was a lot more satisfying to hit the record shops, mixtapes , college radio shows, raves etc to find and hear new music than it is to browse soundcloud or whatever. it also created a better community imo... not to say the digital community isnt of value, but you used to have to actually interact with people in person to get music..the whole "word of mouth" thing was literal not figurative.

So the scenes wouldnt dissapear, but it would probably diminish. a lot of the casual listeners and party kids or trend followers wouldnt put that type of effort into tracking down tunes and youd be left with those who do it cuz they truly believe in it.

Just read that the White House isn't going to go through with this SOPA law. They do think that something should be done about piracy and thus agree with certain SOPA statements, but not all of them and they think that it overall wouldn't be a good solution.
They're now asking the US citizens to also come up with solutions to deal with online piracy.

You know i would agree with that, i find it more exsiting to go to a record store and look up all the artists i love and even find hidden tracks i didnt know exsisted but the problem is that i live in central los angeles... which is kind of dry in its record shop community and not to say radio fucking sucks here. The raves are all for house music and trendy pop shit and everything is produced by youtube and soundcloud over here :( its gay but their isn't as mush access as there should be to new music other then TV and the Internet

Well as a clue regarding what copyright law is going to make possible a student in the UK is being extradited to the USA to face charges for supposedly 'infringing copyright law': he posted links to media content that was available free elsewhere.

He did not host any of the material and it is not a crime in the UK to do this...

Aside from your unfortunately homophobic remark at the end there, I'm in the same boat - being off in the deep north of the states doesn't exactly lend itself to rave culture. tbh Rinse is the only dubstep show I've ever "been" to; the internet's my lifeline to good music.

Ok "homophobic" is probably the wrong term but your not from here so i guess i wouldnt expect you to understand... I do agree though, the shows are all 18 to 21+ shows that are mostly the big brostep producers and thats it. This years coachella event though is going to be pretty epic in that since but im still to young to be going to these far as hell shows for days at a time :( i hope the internet is still free for exploration and that no limits are place since it would be the end of my insight to new music :(

I think this may be incorrect. this poor student is ridiculously being charged as you said. however he is being charged under the digital millennium copyright act. obviously this law is in place already and this legal action wouldnt have anything to do with sopa/pipa.

I think the us (read:copyright holders/corporations) has seen that its not cost effective or a deterrent to individually prosecute people who do these relatively benign activities, like posting a link on a blog or whatever. One of the goals of this bill is to shift the burden from individuals to the websites themselves. This way enitre sites will be taken down and all the content posted will end up being reviewed before it goes up. Imagine someone checking every post on dsf to make sure infringing links dont show up. it would be next to impossible to monitor and dsf would liable if they failed. So this would actually prevent such legal actions against individuals like this uk student. Facebook, youtube or sites that host blogs have much deeper pockets than some poor student ;-).

Im at a point now in regards to the entertainment industry that i stay completely away from anything made by hollywood or on a major record label. There are so many great independent films and documentaries and so much great independant music to satisfy me that i just dont care what is being put out in the mainstream.

Yeah I should have just put "To highlight how ridiculous copyright law already is..."

Maybe it is worth having but not so onerous, though.
