Tascam VL-X5. Amazing value and very accurate.

best for the low end buck would be the rokkits, made by KRK. 8 inch is what I would suggest, or even the 5 inchers and a 10 inch sub. cheap package and fairly quality!

if you have money go genelic, dynaudio, mackie etc...

im gunna be going into some shops this week testing a whole bunch of the lower-budget monitors in an attempt to decide...

everyone seems to have their own opinion and i cant see a clear cut winner in the range.. deff gunna need a sub tho

They're good monitors, but i had to relegate mine to the lounge (TV/Music/DVD playback) as they were far too bass-light for dubstep. There's hardly any bass below about 60hz which makes writing basslines a real headache.

If you want bass, go for the larger S8s. Also try the budget KRKs and look out for bargain priced alesis monitor mk2's.

I have the Rokit KRK 8's, sweet, thick bottom end but not over bassy, great nearfields, love 'em.

Behringer Truth's that are for sale also are worth a check out, heard they're great value for the money. I read a lot of reviews about them and the KRK's... went for the KRK's 'cos my mate had an earlier set and I liked the sound. Think long term when buying monitors, you gonna have 'em for a while, worth shelling out the extra cash for what ya really want.

How much money do you have to spend? If you got a couple hundred then I'd go for the Fostex PM1 for £270.00 and if you can afford it get the Fostex PM0.5 SUB for £144.99.

I wouldn't bother with cheap monitors for about 100 quid because their quite often muddy with shitty highs. Although the Alesis ONE MKII's are a damn good buy with excellent bass response but again they sound a tad muddy and the the highs aren't as good as they could be, but if you own a sub and/or EQ their pretty good for the ya dollar.

And I wouldn't bother doing all your work in headphones because your mix will quite possibly sound different on other systems which is not what you want.

Personally I'd say Genelec 8020's - massive sound from a 4" cone and you can add a sub later.

Alesis M1 Active MkII, you can pick them up pretty cheap now. I worked with these for years and was always surprised how well the mixes sounded on more expensive set-ups including Genelec 1038B's. A very neutral monitor. Placement can be used to optimise the bass response, but the reality is no nearfield monitor is going to give the extension you need for accurate monitoring below 80HZ despite what the spec chart says. Anyway, whatever you choose go for active, unless you have a nice power amp.

I dunno about the Alesis ones, they sound really muddy to me.

I tried out a load of different monitors, originally intending to get the Alesis, but I ended up buying a pair of Fostex PM 0.5 and then adding the 0.5 Sub later when I got the extra cash.

For the money they sounded the cleanest and most accurate out there, and the SUB is killer when you get it dialled in just right. You can still hear the highs and mid range clearly but you can actually feel the bass.

However, even though I've got them I still make terrible tunes.
