The youth of today have no real musical 'movement' to call their own.
Rap used to mean something
Grunge used to mean something
Drum & Bass used to mean something
''''''Dubstep'''''' used to mean something
Now it's all been tapped by the mainstream and they all have their own 'commercial' equivalents that are packaged up and sold to the masses with the illusion of being 'underground' music.

Dubstep fashion? Over-hype? Each topic is bound to split opinion and controversialism is subjective anyway but I'll think of more.

i'd write about the positive/negative aspects of an increase in bedroom producers and the availability of super accessable, easy to use production software. its created a level playing field in a way but as a cost of that every other guy is churning out shit tunes and jumping on whatever genres cool that week, hindering things from evolving naturally like they used to in the past
lana del ray would be a good one too mainly because shes an embodiment of how crafty the music industry is these days - building pop artists from the ground up and then selling them as if they're little DIY indie acts

Do something like...
Why are people accepting second rate manufactured artist
instead of seeking out great music - in this time of unlimited media access...
Is the television still the main source of information for the masses?
Are they having problems accepting non-vocal driven music?
Are they looking for image focused self-centered fantasy projection and not music at all?
Do they just have zero taste?
How are musical tastes determined...is it provided by the market
or does the market cater? if so..to whom - the consumer or for the working artists?
Do the market or industry proffesionals even recognize unconventional forward thinking artists?
Can it be hijacked and made mediocre by tasteless or self serving non-ethical business people?
or Am I the one that has the problem accepting Taylor Swift as vanguard?
Is my perception rotted for picking D-Bridge - as one of super many?
Am I wrong for hating this video - I fucking hate it...
school is now a church for high maintenance girls - fucking great - legions of them
...entitled preciousness
I'm whining again...Do your paper on why do people suck.

And in that same way of thinking, you could talk about the fact that back in the day, a lot of the mainstream music was really good. Look at the 60's and 70's. You had all these timeless rock and pop and soul and funk and then disco artists. It just seems like there was so much music in that span of 25 years (give or take) that will be regarded as timeless. And So much of it also achieved public success as well (being mainstream). Look at the golden era of hip hop. There was a ton of heads that achieved public success yet still stayed true to the original values of hip hop. It just seems somewhere along the line that the word "mainstream" has become more and more synonomous with watered or dumbed down. Love it or hate it, The Beatles will most likely be seen as one of the greatest bands of all time, and they were also one of the most popular bands of all time.

Edit: I didn't scroll down, BM actually coming with some quality.
This video Knell posted is great, even if you don't want to do your paper on that subject. I still have it on my hardrive in 1080p. One of the few I've kept for rewatch purposes. Good for musical inspiration as well.

Especially when you have time on your side to make the world forget some of the god awful shit that was released in the 60s and 70s.
