Just wondering what keeps you guys motivated to keep at it each day? (without the obvious Weed smoking comment)

Sometimes even if everything is goin well and the ideas are there I find myself procrastinating the hours away for nearly days at a time.

I love making music but sometimes it's hard to get focused. some people seem to never stop/slow down


What's everyone else approach??

i guess it just comes down to how passionate you are. I feel unaccomplished if im not creating something, and i love creating sound too much to stop really
sometimes life gets in the way, but hey im in exam week right now and still producing 3-4 hours a day. i wouldnt recommend this if you need to study though

I do it in fits and starts. Do it intensely for a week or two, piddle about at it for another few weeks, decide all my music is shit and no-one would ever want to listen to it, take a month or so off, get a burst of inspiration and start all over again. I usually end up with lots of half-finished songs that had potential but ended up pissing me off. Even the ones I finish are rushed in the end because I'm sick of them and just want to actually have something to show for it all.

i think it's more of an obsession with trying to figure out why i can't get enough of a certain sound or aspect of a track

i then try to recreate the idea and usually fail

but then again, i would prob lose motivation if i could figure everything out easily

soo... find some new music!

It can be fairly de-motivating alright.
i have no problem at all making the sounds i want etc.. sometimes i'll sit for hours making sounds and then feel like i've just heard them too much to actually use them.

i am passionate about it all it can be hard to keep yourself interested when it's too easy to browse forums/facebook/redtube heh, or when you hear tunes get really big from rinsing the piss out of a few presets (Run DMT)

As I listen to music, make notes whenever I hear something I really like.

When I get home, try to recreate the sound.

i do something similar. i like to browse a couple of forums (DSF, KVR, DOA) and see if i can recreate certain sounds that people are looking for.

most of the time i can come up with something different.

Discipline yourself so that the only time you're allowed to wank is whilst listening to your own music. Then, you'll be s o motivated to produce good music or you wont be able to cum

I do that with my mobile phone recorder

Dump your girlfriend if you have one. Alienate yourself. Do acid, and listen to music. That outta work.

My biggest challenge is balancing girlfriend time and music. All she wants to do is bitch that I'm spending time on a "hobby". Drives me fucking batty.

if you dropped your hobbies, what exactly would it be making you who you are?

sorry to get on a tangent, its just i went thru a lot of that shit with someone
and they said they loved me... yet... this "hobby" is exactly what makes me who i am
stopping isn't even worth considering. if you like me, you like this person who makes tunes
if you don't like the person making tunes, you don't like me
simple as..

oh, as far as motivation... OP try exercise, and building a project solely for sound design. when you start a session, decide whether you're building a track/riddim, or designing sound(s) to use later on.. then commit to the job at hand, and look at each session as an opportunity to learn your tools more thoroughly ... you get enjoyment out of generating good results, right?

try some shit out every day, and get excited about what you're able to do.. layer sounds, process them, make something from something else.. bounce it, file it in your samples folder
maybe do multiple versions, reversed, dry vs. processed, etc. Just get to know the possibilities and get excited about them
its worth a try

Also, its easier if you have no friends.

Nothing should need to motivate you,

if music is something you genuinely enjoy doing then it will come naturally but if you are sat forcing yourself to make music then
maybe its not for you and you might want to find a new hobby..

don't waste time on something you don't enjoy but if you are serious just imagine how good you will be in a few years from now

About 2 months ago i hit a brick wall and have taken a step back from trying to produce.
Iv just been learning as much as i can about everything and writing it all down and keeping it all in a folder.

Before i didn't know fuck all about music theory or the actual theory behind synthesis but now iv dedicated some time to learning its helped me when i try and make actual music.

I just love to jam out to random sounds, eventually some of them become songs

One thing that helps me, is the fact that you can merge project files in ableton into one tune via drag and drop. Makes it easy to hammer out ideas without considering how it might fit in the context of a tune. Sometimes i'm just not inspired to write music but I always like making sounds.

I keep myself motivated by learning new things so I can implement them in my next production. It's weird because I can't make new music if I don't have a new technique to try out. I don't really get motivated by cool melodies or emotions or anything, it's all in the production techniques.

I haven't been able to make any music for the past few weeks because I just can't find anything else to learn...
