Programming drums

Hey guys just wondering how people go about programming their drum tracks. I have a good collection of one hit samples. I was planning to arrange my beats in FLstudio and then export them into cubase which is the DAW i am using. Is this method advised or not? Or is it better to spend more time arranging the samples as audio files in cubase itself?

Thanks in advance for any replies on this

As I said earlier: It is better to spend the time arranging in cubase itself! You'll understand it one day! (The day you''ll learn about mixing)

Thanks again for reply societyloser, i did take what you said before onboard, just like to see what others have to say and how they go about arranging their beats :4:

I'd say rewire fl into cubase, that's how I work with Reason and I love it. Mixing is not an issue when you rewire because you haven't rendered anything and can therefore tweak the drums while mixing.

use whatever your most comfortable with, i would think FL since its so easy with the step sequencer

Is there anyway to get smaller divisions of beats in the step sequencer? Like, say i wanted some triplety hats, i'd have to export to piano roll, and then do whatever. Is there anyway around this?

why would u use two different DAWs in the first place?

Why not just use Cubase OR FL?

And if you feel like you can do drums most effectively in FL, wouldnt that probably be the most effective for the rest of your arrangement?

IDK cubase seems like the most difficult and esp if ur just starting out. I would stick with FL but thats just me

Thanks for the replies guys, i have solved all my probs now though using a drum sampler. I can use all my own samples and can route them to individual channels in cubase so i can edit them seperately. Cubase isnt that difficult for me as i spent 2 years using it in college and i got it for a good price on ebay :D

triplets no, for 1/32 hits, double your original tempo, i dont get why you wouldnt work in piano roll anyway, its just one click away and all of the insane tools for the piano roll can greatly help your drum patterens, the only thing the original step sequencer is for is the swing, after you have the desired swing though bounce that to piano roll!

I don't even build my drums in the step sequencer or the piano roll anymore; I just drag the raw audio in to the sequencer in fruity just the same you'd do with Cubase, logic or ableton unless you're using a sampler.

Most sequencer based DAWs work this way and if you decide to do it now; you won't come up stuck later down the line if you decide to move onto something else.

smart, but what about when you want to edit velocity/panning (all the option for the sliders in the bottom of the piano roll) for individual hits?

in cubase simple pencil can do velocity drawing for individual hits, panning is a bit different you just automate it if you want, bu since all my drum elements are in separate track, even open and closed hats are on different tracks, i just pan the track where i want it to be to...thou i don't like when closed hats go from left to right.

In Fruity, if you click the top left of audio in the sequencer you can go .. Automation > volume/pan and then make "unique" for each hit you want to change things on it.

To each their own.
