Why are so many dubstep fans so protective of the genre?

I always have a good laugh at the people who consistently say things like "I've been listening to dubstep since the 90's", and "Thats not even dubstep"
Its just like, well then, what the fuck is dubstep...?
Its funny to see so many guys say 'if you aren't listening to *(certain artists name)* then you haven't heard dubstep. I really don't get it. Its quite stupid.
Pretty much sounds like a bunch of old grandmas saying '"oh thats not music, it doesn't have a conductor and lots of string instruments"
It's not like I don't call a car, 'a car' because it don't run on steam no more...
Get with the times
Like to get to my point... You'll hear songs that are clearly dubstep etc. But because its 'new' and hits a large population, all the underground boys come out and claim it to be not dubstep.
For my examples, I'm not a fanboy for either of these guys, and I know so many people are gonna come straight and say "but dude that is not dubstep" But seriously, cry me a river.
Example 1: Ellie Goulding Lights (Bassnectar Remix)
Example 2: Skrillex - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites
(These are the two most obvious examples of where all the underground boys come out and claim it ain't dubstep)

And to get anybody who makes these claims, you have to understand that dubstep is a genre based purely around sub-bass and the passion for sub-bass, to put it in as few words without wasting my time.
skrillex doesn't really claim to be dubstep, so 1 up to him, but he does have an issue with people who prefer the original sound too
bassnectar thinks it's very similar to metal, i heard that once, if so, bassnectar is an idiot.
i hope that helped.

Well.. it's actually true? So many people here claimed 'dubstep' as 'theirs' and can't stand the feeling of being associated with 15 year old (bisexual, n if u dont liek it, deal w/i) girls who drink wine coolers.

The levels of concern people give to what other people think about music is startling.

I ask because it's not very different from around 10 years ago where most people's perception of techno was that it was Scooter or Darude. It's nothing to do with evolution, just ignorance. It's happened before and it'll happen again. People are often impatient when they have to correct people all the time. This isn't a problem exclusive to dubstep. Those who are passionate about something often get upset when misinformation is widespread. We're all guilty of being misinformed about stuff in various fields. But I've stopped giving a shit either way
