Free vinyl...

Right guys,

I'm new to here (well I always check out threads via Google for tracklistings on mixes etc), but finally decided to register an account.... Any ways.

I have an idea for an iPhone app, but wanted to see the interest on here to determine weather I go ahead and make the app.

Have any of you heard of geo-caching?

Basically, all it is in a nutshell, is an advanced treasure hunt using a GPRS device, eg/ an iPhone.

You use pinned locations on a map to find where different "cache/treasure" is located. When you are at a given location, there is a clue to the where abouts of the "cache". Once you solve the clue, you obviously find the treasure. This is normally pretty trivial stuff (So no-one ends up nicking the treasure). This seems pretty rubbish to me, but hey, alot of people are into it.

My idea is to randomly scatter 300+ oldskool/grime vinyl's around the london area on a given day, with all of the locations pinned on the map. Obviously you wont know what vinyl you are looking for until you eventually find them. A pretty easy way to grab yourself a free vinyl. There will then be a table of "found so far" vinyls on a given website so user can track what vinyls have been found so far and their locations. You can determine what vinyls are still left and up for grabs.

There will be a fair few rare vinyls up for grabs so therefore, if your up for grabbing urself a decent vinyl you may need to start visiting several locations.....

PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS...

Regards

LBL

Intriguing.

What would be the point of doing this though - not so much giving away the 300 bits of vinyl, but what would you be getting out of it?

My thoughts are that trying to sell 300+ vinyl would not really see much cash (No even half of what I paid for them). However if I was to charge £0.69 per app purchase and could maybe get a little hype about the day the map goes live, resulting in maybe making a tad more money than I would just selling them. Also, I have just got into iPhone app development at work and have been thinking of a cool app I could make to test my knowledge so far...

cheers for the reply dude

So people would be buying the app, which would allow them to enter the contest of searching for the prizes?

Indeed, the only way to find the locations of the vinyls would be to purchase the app

Sounds a good idea at first, but if you're looking to make more than you would from selling the vinyl privately, even if you got something ridiculous like £2 per vinyl, at 300 records that's still £600.00. That means for it to work for you, at 69p per app that's at least 870 fuckers who are better at orienteering than me hunting round a city I don't know particularly well for tunes I might not even like

Good luck with it like :W:

seriously though if those vinyls are being put outside, package them in some airtight plastic, don't want them going mouldy

make sure you cache them in a cooler location, would hate to see a bunch of vinyl go to waste by getting weathered and warped. you also have to think about who you're marketing to, why sell an app on a global market if you're only going to hide these vinyls in one city.

Good thought actually ariosa, I was actually thinking last night on that, I may initially trial it out in London, then if it goes well, maybe hit up another big city like Manchester or something..

You`re not just going to leave them lying around waiting to be found are you?

They will be "stashed" lol. I will be putting them into fairly decent packaging so they are not weathered.

hehe, that`s my question

Surely you`ll need to find stores or individuals willing to keep them handy.

Well i was initially thinking that they would be stashed above bus stops, in and around tube stations, rail stations etc... Needs some thought

Not sure that hiding a load of unmarked packages around public transport facilities in London would particularly endear you to the authorities.
