Any good examples of dubstep with high-level music theory apparent? Maybe the use of complex scales or modes etc. So much of modern dubstep just centres around 1 or 2 notes making different weird noises which is good in its own way. However I wanted to know if there are any artists or songs where the writing is very technical, maybe using a wide range of notes and unusual chords. It doesn't have to sound the best, I just wanted some music like that to study.

There was a trained pianist making tunes a couple of years ago. It had nice progressions and melodies. I don't recall his nick or if he's still doing it, but try a search. I'll find his info when I'm off my mobile and post it.

Gemini is a trained pianist, and his stuff is nice. Don't know if he's your guy, though.

Yeah that's what I was going to say. Gemini's a trained pianist, but tbh, his stuff isn't that musically complex, mostly just typical chord patterns.

I don't want to sound arrogant, but if you want to listen to music with complex melodies, counter melodies, chords, key changes etc. listen to classical music. I know it may not be what your after but you can really benefit from it. Even jazz music is good for studying.

I like jazz more than classical many cases, when it comes to music theory
Love him or hate him, Feed me uses some pretty crazy melodies for a lot of his leads; much more melodically complex than your average tearout producer (not so much his drum and bass stuff, but his newer output for sure). Also, I don't particularly care for most of Deadmau5' music (and he's not a dubstep producer) but he really does use some complex chord progressions in some of his tracks. I know wolfgang gartner (once again not dubstep but still EDM) is classically trained and it shows in a lot of his tracks. A lot of producers nowadays just aren't classically trained, and it seems to show in their music (myself included-> I played trombone in orchestra for 7 years but aside from knowing how to read bass and tenor cleff, I'm not great at chord progressions or complex composition).

+1 to Deadmau5, some musically complex and innovative output from him for sure. Especially his older stuff.

Brown & Gammon - Riddle Me This
Brown & Gammon - Blow My Mind
Brown & Gammon - Jurassic (Drop is sick)
I think brown & gammon is pretty good cuz they got catchy melodies/original sounding note-wise compared to a lot of artists...really different in general.
Porter Robinson - Unison(Knife Party Remix)
I think Knife Party is realllllllllllllllly good. Probably the best artist in my book as of right now.
Zomboy - Dirty Disco
There's a million things going on in this song. You can study this lol.
I could find some more ish. I dunno what you're exactly looking for though.

Blackmill dubstep, one of my favorite melodic dubstep producers. I could listen to his stuff for hours.
