i just try and make sure that i don't go crazy by starring at a screen and get some human interaction.

Im 21 aswell, I do feel that in some ways i could have spent my 'best days' better but i see it as working towards a goal as i would like to make a living from music in some way and ultimately when i get there they will be the best days of my life.
with you though as you say you dont want it to be your job as such its a bit harder to say but at the end of the day you will do what you want to do, theres no point dwelling on things you havnt done, its not like you can go back and change them and to be honest whos to say you would have had a better time. Music is a good way to relax and de-stress, you just need a balance between staring at a computer screen and interacting with real people

man I wish I'd produced from 18-22 instead of partying so much. Didn't even start producing til I was 22.

My days consist of going to school, coming home, sitting on the computer producing, and talking to friends on xbox. I'm 18 and never had a job yet. I should be getting a job at the new animal shelter opening up around here soon though. So then it'll be go to school, go to work, come home, get on the computer, and play xbox.

I spent 11 years of my life skydiving. It took me away from music in a way, mostly from the sheer amount of time I spent at the dropzone. Those 11 years I'm happy came in my late 20s and 30s. If I got into skydiving later in life, like at age 60... well... people do... but I'm glad I did it when I did it.

Now I'm back to music as the center of my life.

But, if you're enjoying what you're doing, then don't have regrets.

Believe me your better to be 21 and working towards something then 41 and running out of time.I wasted my early 20's getting high playing computer games and generally just fuckarsing around with my mates.I love being a hermit now and making tunes i just wish i was on it sooner.I'm early 30's now kids and all that bs and believe me when i say i gota work fucking hard to provide so i don't get as much me time as i like.

I don't like people so it's okay. Music's been everything I do since I was 13.

What else is there to do? Once you've got school and work out of the way your spare time consists of doing what you want to do.

Not everyone wants to drink themselves stupid and sleep with random women; some people (like me) find that far more pathetic than sitting in doors and making beats.

while it is fun to drink yourself stupid and sleep with random women - it's far better for you to be productive, as opposed to destructive. i mean, in this situation - the best you can hope for is to not get aids or become an alcoholic. while if you produce, if you're constructive with your time, the best you can hope for is probably what you've always wanted (tunes that outlive you, plus the fame fortune and femme).

If you're enjoying how you spend your time I wouldn't call it a waste by any means. Wether it be making music, watching t.v or beating off. If i'm being less "productive" by sitting in front of my computer for hours every day slaving away at bass sounds and music theory but i'm happy, that seems like time well spent

this, when ur in early 20s like i was, unemployed- well a student, u dotn think about it and then dont realise how its affecting u, so so so so important to interact face to face with people- sounds obvious but if ur truely passionate about music- its too easy to become a hermit, get into bad habits and let ur passion become an obsession. Then it affects ur mental health, and u dont wana go down that road, believe u me.

ive been there, done that bought the fucking t- shirt, its all about balance, go out have fun with ur mates, get wasted, sleep with girls and if ur truely passionate about music, u will always come back to producing/mixing/creating cause thats apart of what makes u, u.

also it takes time to grow as an artist. whether that be refining ur sound, or finding those records u love. u gotta think about the long term as well as the short term, if u take urself seriously enough to consider some sort of career out of it. if so, then take ur time, there is no rush, as i said its about developing ur talent.

things like this cross my mind a lot when spending days producing. i find i do chose to hang out with friends over producing and use producing as kind of a filler for the time being, simply because im a sr in highschool and i know those friends are going to be gone when i go to college. but ultimately, you should always do what makes you happy. want to produce? produce. want to get fucked up? get fucked up. when looking back on my gaming days, spending 5+ hours a day regularly, my first instinct is to regret it and wish i had done something else. simply because society tells me to. however after a bit of contemplation i dont regret the daily routine i followed from age 10(or so)-16 of eat sleep school gaming. whether it was halo 2, 3, runescape, world of warcraft, each one i found that i did it because i deeply enjoyed myself when i was doing it. so to me, it wasnt a waste of time. now that i have a hobby that i can be productive and enjoy, its the best of both worlds! :h:
my rule of thumb: if it made you happy, never regret it

I'm 29 now and used to party a lot. I don't really regret it, but I do wish I would've spent some of that time producing. However, in my early college days, music was a huge part of my life. My friends and I used to spend a lot of free time digging up new music and then we'd get together, smoke a spliff, and introduce the new music to each other. I probably wouldn't have all the influences I do now with out that.

Excluding hanging out with my family, girlfriend and a few select friends there is pretty much nothing else I'd rather do with my free time than make music.
