Quick question on Vinyl/Record player

Hey Guys/Girls..

so, my next pay check comes in next week, and i've decided i'm going to pick up my own record player, both my parents have one, but they're both old/fucked etc.

i can learn the ropes about all the technical stuff, but i do have one question.

a vast number of record players available for sale at the moment come with the fancy "rip" function, now, morally, i don't have an issue with ripping a vinyl, as if it's a vinyl only release, i'll play out the vinyl, if it's digital, i'll buy the digital as well as.
but for vinyl only releases, it would be nice to have a copy that is listenable/enjoyable for my own use (listening in the car etc/ipod.)

can anybody tell me from personal experience if these USB rippers are of any real value? or would i be fine to just record through my current setup. RCA to 1/8" (headphone jack) from my mixer to the input jack of my macbook, into logic.

i know it's not the best set up etc, but whenever i record my CDJ's it seems to load up quite fine in quality etc..

cheers in advance.

as long as it's an input, not a mic in, i'd imagine a mac soundcard might be better than a cheap usb turntable's.

but then again it all depends on everything between the needle and the processor.

yeah that's what i would've thought in general, i guess it's possible then, that the turntable i'm looking at which is cheaper but doesn't have the usb function, might be of slightly better quality? i mean, if i have an alternative option to usb, then i can wipe out getting a usb one, and focus on getting a "better" one.

cheers for your help, i guess i'll use search/create a new topic later down the track if i need any help with needles etc (i don't know just how good my parents knowledge is.)

Dont get a shitty usb turntable. Get a project one and rip the audio through audacity. Usb decks are shit.

yeah cheers, definitely not keen on usb, i'll have a look around, so i know get a rough idea, how much would i want to be spending? i mean if it's going to get anywhere near half the price of an individual 1210 then i'll just wait and save haha.

appreciate the help.

Project debut 3 is about 250 and its ideal for home listening. Comes with an ortofon cartridge and needle so thats good aswell.

much better idea than a 1210 if youre just listening to the records.

if you want to use a 1200 or another strictly vinyl turntable, you will need to put it through a preamp or something else to convert the signal to line level if you are going to be recording your records onto your pc. don't get a usb turntable though, because they are mostly cheap parts, and even if it did work for a little bit, the recordings might end up a bit iffy due to unstable platter, shotty needle, or countless other problems...

keeping price objective, probably something from the project line. i haven't done a lot of research on $1000+ turntables, but they're easy to find.

my next project is to replace the tonearms on my technics with an audiophile grade set. still dj friendly, but much better sound.

If a vinyl-only record is released, respect the format, respect the record and respect the producer, do not rip it.

Only my perspective, As a vinyl-only label owner.

Respect.

I rip my vinyl only stuff just for my own iPod. It's nice to be able to listen to white labels or Swamp/DMZ stuff on the way to and from class, but its not like I'm putting the up for people to download. Your remix of Dem A Talk is a percy.
