Why does Deadmau5 etc sound so much more professional?

Okay, so listening to Deadmau5 his sounds are so fucking clean and beautiful, even his drums and shit, which in theory anyone should be able to replicate with the right samples... I don't understand why my tracks come out sounding so much dirtier and not as good, is it in the mixing or what?

Yup its mixing, its all the little things that he's fine tuned to perfection over the years, its all about practice man. Do a couple hours a day for the next 10 years or so like he has and you might start to get somewhere

In the mean time check out the money shot thread and just try to make as good a track as you possibly can! I'd also advise doing stuff with more experienced producers because you'll learn a lot faster that way.

Don't know whether it's true or not but I think he knows everything about sound synthesis.

Gurnumsbug wrote:He was streaming himself working on a track all last night buddy!
He was also talking about samples, recording, mixing, vocal processing and all that jazz.
edit: His claps are of his own, & he layers them. Also for different sounds, he smacks his ass with his hand and records that...& no i'm not joking!
His nu track sounds ace though, really digging it!
Link?

well he streams live from here
http://live.deadmau5.com/ his nu track is called "the veldt", & I can't find a "smacking the ass" video anywhere, since "Copyright 2012 Mau5trap Unauthorised distribution of this footage is prohibited"
edit: I found the track he was working on

Yeah, its not just upto the production values though, its the composition and overall songwriting that makes it sound so.

I don't agree with you there. Sorry, but I think that is just plain wrong. It is all about the sound and what samples/instruments you put in there; not the notes you write.

yeah depone is not the person to argue with about this. Composition and songwriting is a lot more than note choice btw. What he is saying is by what instruments he plays where he cleans up the mix.

i mark this as dubstep's moment where dsf:production became the same thing as the grid in 2006 or so-- production vs. writing. 2 different camps.

he's definitly got some great tunes and is excellent at mixing, but he's got a new drum and bass clip out that is just horrendous...

I don't think this counts. Clearly 4rantrare doesn't even understand the term composition

Yes, mixing, and composition but also remember you're listening to tunes mastered by one of the best mastering houses around. If you're doing A/Bs of his released music with yours, it will sound much more polished. Excessive loudness can also play with your mind in this case and make it sound more polished and professional.
I'm not sure if he posts unmastered stuff, I haven't heard much of his output in a long time, but no doubt he has gotten a plethora of tips from mastering engineers in person. Sitting in on mastering sessions of your own tunes can change your whole perspective on mixing and give you a good idea of how to replicate it in premasters.

There was that thread on how to make drops.

Missed it unfortunately. My hands are quite shaky. I have no trouble with drops.

Well, not sure if you read me right, but I was saying that its not
just down to production technique.
And if you
don’t think its also down to how he composes tunes, then any monkey with the XFR Deadmau5 sound kit and a side-chain compressor should be making tunes on par with him!?
