Nothing beats the classics. Every now and then I catch myself trying to bunny hop in CSS and other slow paced games. Make me go a bit berserk at times. ;-)

You should try them out if you are into ultra fast paced shooters.

Quake 3 is similar to the UT series, however there is no secondary fire and you can't jump off walls, or double jump.

Tribes is an incredibly fast paced series with large scale maps and jet packs. Very few weapons in this game are hit-scan, so you constantly have to lead your target since the majority of the weapons are projectile based.

The original version of Nexuiz is a free, multi-os supported game which incorporates some of the best things about the UT Series and Quake 3. It is an awesome shooter, and I definitely recommend it if you want to try something new. It also has a pretty nice soundtrack:

Here is some old gameplay, seeing as youtube has been filled with the new 360/ps3 version.

I spent most of my late pre-teens and teenage years playing Q3A, played Warsow quite a bit during its prime too (which you didn't mention!!)

I absolutely adore fast paced area shooters - theres just something about dueling which you don't get in other FPS games online; the mix between learning everything from item placements, item timing and planning your routes while trying to kill/avoid (if you're not stacked enough and they might be..) the other person and having to get your aim so good that even your misses are on purpose just brings you back again and again, even the same map for months/years !

If you think CS 5v5 is an adrenaline rush, I pity you hah!

I'm a total anti-UT guy though.. I remember trying to get into UT99 then 2004 and just couldn't. UT2004 had that game mode which you had to capture points with cars and stuff; that was pretty amazing but just felt it was a bit of a Tribes CTF rip off.

I used to play Unreal Tournament with my mum and dad when I was younger.

Got to say, one of the best games I've ever played, definately in my top ten.

*nostalgia*

Hah! Forgot all about Warsow! I remember liking it, but got swept up by Nexuiz most likely by the art style. I need to try out Warsow again as soon as my gpu gets fixed/replaced.

And I agree with the Warfare mode in UT. Vehicles don't belong in a game like UT or Quake, it's all about twitch mechanics and close combat. However Tribes is an exception because it's Tribes. :)

I actually got to participate in the beta, but I didn't have a good experience due to my low-end rig. The gameplay was solid however.

Do you still play any of these shoot-em-ups? If so we need to get an instagib-type match going.

Started playing Quake 3 in 2004 (was my first year at high school) at school, we used to LAN up every lunch time and after school. Literally the most fun I have ever had and it will never be beaten. I was shit but that's when you have the most fun, imo, just when you're learning.

Basically been playing it since then really, 8 years of playing quake, nearly half of my life dedicated to a game. Really got into the online scene back in 2005 when Q4 came out, I remember I got in in Tesco for £3! (people don't appreciate great games, sadly) Was still playing Q3 also at this point, as well as a bit of Quakeworld. Then since the QL closed beta started in late 2007 I've been playing that. Although last month I decided to quit, I don't find it even .1% as fun as i used to - so I thought now was a good time to stop and do other things. Still absolutely love the game and will always remember it, I've met a lot of cool people that I will also never forget too.

But yeah, I was one of the top players in the UK when I could be bothered. I can now add 25 and 35 to anything in between 0-60 without even thinking about it and keep various numbers in my head in specific orders for a long time. I'm sure that's going to be helpful.

Quake will never die.

I played all of them. Quake 3 was my favourite by far. All because of this absolute gem of a mod, DeFrag.

Who said you couldn't jump off walls in Q3A?

This video is from one of the defrag world cups that are held each year (not sure if it's still going or not though).

I had quite a few rank #1's and #2's on a lot of maps on this mod. The beauty of it was that every single map was user-made, and some of the guys doing it were icredibly talented. There were competitions being held on brand new maps every week, so it never got old. Because of the way the Quake 3 physics engine worked there were always new tricks and methods being discovered. Some guys even created a completely separate physics mode called 'CPM' which allowed you to move much more freely whilst in the air. I made a few maps in my time aswell... It's just such an innovative way to play the game. People still play it now, in fact I may have to re-visit some of my old favourite servers...

EDIT: You'll probably be wondering why everyone jumps sideways all the time, it's known as strafe jumping and it's basically bunny hopping whilst strafing using the mouse to steer. Because of the way Q3 physics work, the fact that you can bunny hop and the fact that strafing whilst moving forwards is faster than just going forwards, strafe jumping basically makes you go faster and faster and faster and faster until you stop jumping.

Also used to play InstaUnlagged, a railgun mod that adjusted railgun knockback and reload speed to ridiculous levels. Basically your railgun fired about as fast as the rocket launcher and had even more powerful knockback that was harmless, so you could almost fly around maps.

This guy was probably one of the best in the game. I used to play with him and lot of the people you see in the video when I was in one of his rival clans. Ahhh gaming memories :Q:

Defrag was sick, I LOVE CPM movement, I really wished QuakeLive at had it!

I never did master the circle jump though! I could do all the rocket, rail and plasma jumps but as soon as it came to circle jump platforms I died haha! Work that one out.
