How much does a bad room affect the bass frequencies. For example, i'm writing a drum loop and it sounds great, but i've noticed a difference in the timbre of the kick going from headphones to my monitors,(if you would call them that, they are Numark NPM 5s

) whereas adjustments that I an clearly hear in my headphones are inaudible on the monitors. would a background noise filled room made out of brick walls with my speakers up against the wall be doing it (that just sounds retarded, can't wait till this semester is done.)

That might be a part of it, however there is always a noticable difference in headphone sound versus monitor sound, especially when they are shitty monitors.
So I think your speakers are most of the problem and the room might play part in it as well.

The more you know your speakers, the less the room matters. Not saying it doesn't factor in. Of course it does, but you learn where and how to compensate.
But yeah move them away from walls if you can. Preferably near the middle with equal distance on either side.

Actually, imho, I think headphones are better than monitors for more subtle stuff, unless your monitors are very good AND you have a room treated very well (which is impossible outside a real studio). For example, people that mix with headphones only tend to apply less reverb than people with monitors only. Mostly because with headphones, you hear the reverb much better.
Monitors are better for impact stuff like kick and bass though.
The secret is to use both. Or spends some grands and isolate your room

Yeah I notice the detail easier with headphones but with being at school i just don't use my monitors really at all, i can't wait until i get my own place so i can treat it but for now i'm just gonna use the cans. Thanks guys.

room can effect bass quite a bit. when i'm working on my monitors in my apartment i have to be conscious that in some spots i can't really hear the bass but it is there. so when i want to see what the bassline feels like, i have to move over to a resonant spot.
