Bass in mono?

Some dubplate cutters say that they can't cut bass in stereo... So... It's normal to make bass in mono? How do you make this?

it´s true that if you cut vinyl, the basshas to be mono. Usually the mastering/cutting engineer sum all frequencies below eg. 200 or 300 Hz to mono, as the cutting stylus can´t cut grooves at those frequencies in stereo. It´s rather technical and difficult to explain why it´s not possible.

I use a free plugin called mda image

I'm sure other fx packs do similar plugins..waves...psp..ultrafunkFX..etc

as far as I know there is no point in panning bass frequencies because the human ear cant recognise it so it should never need to be in stereo.

That's what I was about to say.

But especially in DnB, grime and dubstep alot of the bass synths are very mid-range too, and in this case stereo is an issue. What you can do, if it has to be cut on to vinyl, is to ask the mastering enginer to od it for you, or do it yourself (in Reason 3.0 you can use the new mastering units for the purpose).

In the mixing phase also make sure that kick and bass is in center. You can have a stereo bass, but this can be narrowed using the pan pots. However, if you plan to burn it to CD you should´t worry about it.

think of it like this - if you try to cut heavy low-end in stereo, you'll blow the fucking needle off the cutting head.

wicked, but expensive...

Exatcly. As the cutting head moves both vertical and horizontal while cutting - and low end frequencies require huge grooves to be cut - it wont be able to cut those frequencies. This is the reason why the RIAA curve was introduced; this eq curve among other things thins out the low end before cutting, so the grooves cut doesn´t have to be as wide, and it is introduced again at the playback stage. This is one of the reasons why a phono signal attached to a line level input sounds weird.

Its not just panning of the bass that is a danger - some people fall down the trap of adding chorus to their basslines which would be a more common and problematic issue

a lot of club systems are in mono too to reduce phasing so any extreme stereo stuff may not be heard in a lot of situations (always good on headphones though!)

there's a great free plugin called StereoTool

one of the things it does is it allows you to sum to mono everything below a frequency that you choose
