Started by saying the culture was 'hideous', because of its association with hedonism and the problems of drug taking. Then seems to change entirely and say it's a progressive idea, due to juxtaposition of ideas. He didn't seem to properly distinguish between being passionate about DJing and the music, and on the other hand the 'club' / friday night mentality of people going out to get wasted or have sex.
Seems like he should / could have planned it out a bit better or something.
Also saying The Glass Bead Game went nowhere irritated me so much... That book is insanely interesting.

Don't want to come off as elitist but it's far more common in clubs what your average person goes to but a deep dubstep nights it's different.

I didn't say the book wasn't interesting, did I? I chose it as a parallel precisely because it IS interesting, and I hope some people read it as a result. Funny thing, someone ran up to me as I came off saying they'd just finished speaking and they agreed with what I said... swings / roundabouts / horses / courses etc.
If you didn't realise, the talk wasn't intended as a university dissertation or manifesto... not everything I said in it was meant to be taken 100% seriously, it was done on the fly as a personal response to some of the previous things that had been discussed that night, and was just meant to highlight the extremes that exist side-by-side in the culture that we are all a part of.
There is NOT a clean separation between the "cool" music lover clubs and friday night meat markets. They are yin and yang, opposite in some ways but flowing into one another and each containing a seed of the other - they are part of the same machine, they share infrastructure and many characteristics, their relationship is symbiotic. I don't think you can appreciate the good without acknowledging the bad.

While i'm afraid i had not heard of you before (although i have your Guardian articles in the past) i really enjoyed listening to this!
Basically highlights why i do not go to clubs... just personally hate the culture for the ones accessible to me (yeah that's a really personal thing).

Couldn't take more than 5 minutes of the dude's hyperventilation and absolutely inane blabbering before turning it off.

Either a bit of a Charlie Brooker pastiche, or you've spent a lot of time going to some shit nights and dealing with some wankers.
Guess it's your experience though, like your reviews, etc. but not sure how I feel on this one.
Edit: Gets better as it goes on.
Edit: Chatting a bit more egg as it goes further on.

I thought it was vastly interesting. If this was an on the fly though, it was obvious you had some jitters before you got to the point you wanted to make.
It was a bit blurred but would I be correct in saying that the idea of a DJ being able to bring what they believe/represent/feel through music to crowds of people is powerful but DJ culture doesn't do that... Or something along them lines? Thats what I got from it anyways!
If so; I think that is a very valid and true concept.
P.S - you done a TED talk, so many brownie points go to you.
P.S.S - you lot show know Joe Muggs is a bit controversial haha!

I had to turn it off, felt like you were trying too hard to come across funny, smart but ultimately correct.. like everybody in the audience should be going "Ha, he is so right that is exactly how it is and thats why its so funny!". Whereas my clubbing experience is the complete opposite. I think you've just been to one too many nights where drugged up morons have irritated and ruined your night and this has led you to make huge generalisations.
The drug argument is a big one. Most of the people I know who take drugs know very little about music, don't pay much attention to music and just want to go out and get fucked up. My friends (and I) who take a huge interest in music, follow and support DJs, are more than happy to go to a night and stay sober all night. Infact I much prefer going to a club, having a few beers while there and watch a DJ than go out, get paraletic and remember none of the music. Unless you're at a big night and right at the front its very easy to avoid the drugged up morons who are only there to get fucked up.
I guess it would have been more amusing and interesting to someone who has had similar experiences as you, I however have mostly experienced the opposite so would disagree with almost everything I heard in the first 5 minutes.

What the fuck did I just watch?
Enlightenment? 'What was the significance of that musical clash?'
Mate... you think wayyyyy too much. You read into things way too much as well.
By the way, enlightenment has nothing to do with music.. zip, squelch, nada - sorry.
Inane rambling indeed.

that sounded like me when i feel i've got something important to get across to someone, but can't quite find my focus to get the point across.. usually when i'm on drugs..
no disrespect to joe intended, as i find nerves can have a similar effect on my ability to be concise when i most need it.
maybe there is plenty to be said on a hideous DJ colture, but in the same way, it's probably important to acknowledge that shortcomings of any nature usually point to something deeper than the original subject being looked at. in this case all you see that is wrong with dj couture is just a reflection of a damaged, rotten society in general thats gradually corrupted dj couture.
remember something in the past that you found fresh/new and pure and remember how you marveled at it initially, and then think about how you feel about it now.. i'm guessing that you will feel less excited about it, and i'm not talking about a "honeymoon preiod over" idea. i think the "thing" usually gains momentum, inevitably rubs shoulder with whats ultimately the real rotten ingredient, and then cannot break free from that, becomes corrupted, then we feel hate for it because its changed from what we knew for the worse..
it's the same with everything really.
the thing i attribute to the failing of almost EVERYTHING is....... MONEY, the accumulation of it to the detriment of others, the greed it propagates, and the monsters creates in all this.
i apologise if im going off on tangent here, but to me it's relevant, and i felt joe seemed maybe to be on the cusp of saying something similar, but didn't get there.
P.S. i'm really high. i'll prob see this tomorrow and be really embarrassed. don't give me too much of a hard time...
PEACE.. off to try and make a chooooon
