Every thug has his ‘Dre’
The city’s thugs have a new favorite to go with their stolen iPhones — stolen Dr. Dre headphones.
The legendary rapper’s pricey, high-tech headphones, called Beats by Dr. Dre, are the new rage among bandits because they’re seen as “status symbols,” a police source said.
Although they have yet to dethrone the iPhone as thieves’ top target, the headphones — which retail for $300 to $500 — are being snatched from kids at an alarming rate since the latest model hit the market at around Christmas.
“They’re very hot among thieves,” the source said. “It’s like, ‘I see it. I want it. I can have it. I’m taking it for me, or my sister needs a pair,’ ” the source said, adding that crooks also resell them.
The perps are beating up youths, threatening them, and, in some cases, brandishing weapons.
Uptown Manhattan and northern parts of Brooklyn have been hit hard.
In Brooklyn North alone — which includes Williamsburg — there have been dozens of Beats heists over the past four months.
“They’re being snatched from teenagers aboard subways or as they walk to and from school,” according to the source.
The thefts are going on even in trendy Brooklyn Heights, where a goon demanded a pair from a teenager after barking, “Give me your Beats!” on April 17. After the victim turned them over, he was punched in the face.
Thefts of the headphones are underreported because they are rarely insured and can’t be traced.
Some victims are so engrossed in their music that they’re unaware of their surroundings.
“People’s heads are buried in them,” one source said. “They don’t even know what’s going on.”
This past March, a Bonnie-and-Clyde team accosted a 14-year-old boy zoning out on music near Columbia University, ripped a pair of Beats off his head, and danced away with them.
“If you are wearing those headphones, you might as well wear a sign that says, ‘Come and rob me,’ ’’ one investigator said.
Personally, I think Beats by Dre are useful - like Ed Hardy clothes and Escalade SUV's - for pre-emptively identifying their owners as supreme douchebags.

haha. "Give me your Beats!" you really do need to hide your expensive electronic shit and not walk around with it on your head screaming I COST 200 QUID. i really don't like that sort of argument but... eh, is there any good reason to own Beats
it's almost been done to death already but they are fucking ridiculously priced and look awful. i swear you can get professional headphones for like half the price of some of those, but they don't come in the cool colours or whatever. one thing i don't understand about how ubiquitous they are is.... when the fuck did everyone get enough disposable income to drop that much on some headphones???? serious.

Thinking about it someone I used to go to school with who I sometimes pick up from asked if I would like to buy some Beats by Dre recently. Also asked if I'd like to buy blackberrys and a cosh/extendible baton. I declined his offers, he's a dodgy tnuc.

Because these aren't headphones, but a fashion statement. And everyone has money for a fashion statement.
And they really don't sound good at all.

^ I see, i see.
And hahaha, I couldn't afford them myself as a pair of headphones, and people with less money than me, the kinds who always go on about how poor they are and call you up three weeks later to ask for that £3 they lent you, they have them.

This is hilarious, people wearing beats are instantly classified as complete douche bags. It pisses me off to no end when you hear people talking about how "good quality" Beats are, theyre complete utter shit.

Only heard the 'Solo' model. Don't know... was quite a pleasant sound, a little too bassy for my liking though.
Definitely heard way worse, then again these are quite expensive.

I know quite a few people who have them. I wanna snap a small part of them... cause with beats if one part breaks, the whole lots fucked. What a design!
Literally nobody I have ever met who has beats uses headphones for anything but listening to music, they don't produce or DJ.. yet they somehow feel the need to spend £300+ on headphones. People who produce and DJ don't spend that much. Insane.
