i personally find that when samples and instruments and my trusty stylaphone get pitched down they all have a bass sound-filters and compression on anything and youll get bass-bit abstract but its a thought

Been exparementing with lyers and eqing of harmonics lately...

Say your sub is ~ 44hz (roughly an F). Make a copy of it, then overdrive the copy to add a bit of dirt.
Hipass the distorted copy so it blends in naturally with the low sub.
Slap a parametric eq on the distorted copy and start boosting even harmonic multiples of 44hz (44, 88, 176 etc).. sum the two tracks in a bus and low pass if desired.

been producing some decent results.. I think this is how plug ins like Waves "maxbass" work.

in the meantime i do it this way

i take 1 clean subbass on 1 track
then i put a lil bit distortion on it. not too hard. it should sound like a lil bit Bit reduction. Then I put a full parametric filter on it and draw a rhythmic curve. step filter works too but sounds steppy, hacked. parallel 2 the distortion and filter you can use a chorus or flanger effect. It makes the Sound wider and more interesting. Then I put 4 30 Band graphic equalizers on it. at first i mix up the heights between 300Hz and 1KHz. But only what I need for my taste. Then i cut the 60Hz completely down and the 50Hz complete up. Now you can play with the 35Hz and 40 Hz till the Bass comes clean down. But Attention with the 50Hz. If you pull the 30 - 40HZ in, the 50Hz could come too massive. How i say, play with them. I forgot, I need between every single Eq a peak Compressor to cut the massive signaloverload and rescue my speakers. Be careful with the compressor. If you cut too much from the signal the Sound gets distorted. (not fine analogue distortion, more bad algorhythmic earache sound)

play now with the 35Hz, 40 Hz the 50Hz and the 120 2 140Hz till you hear what you need in your Monitors and subwoofer. Pull the Rest down, but not too much, play with it and listen good. Dont make your Bass an Earthquake or a Fart. It should be a Bass. It really works. Dont forget 2 cut the 25 Hz and dubplate cutter will thank you

20 - 25Hz = complete cut

60Hz - 80Hz = complete cut, especially 60Hz. I dont think that you really need the 80HZ cause the Bassdrums often play in this Frequency. And if you need the 80 Hz you must mix the Bassdrum maybe different. A Matter of Taste. Find a Way.

808 bass is where its at but i always layer it with another sub bass sample and make sure to pitch match and eq them so they blend together nicely. BOOOOOm

i believe so, they work by boosting the harmonics and cutting the fundamental so that the ear percieves the bass as being loud and deep. psychoacoustics mojo.

dunno what that means as far as playing tunes on a big system goes. you still need the subs there to move air/intestines.

There was a good article in Future Music magazine a couple of months ago that was dedicated to creating sub bass.
