Its all about your ghost hits and hat lay out.
Something simple like this is easy to copy..Just tambos jittering playing 8ths, snare on the 2, 4 and a few ghosts to set up the next snare hit.

Like ive said loads of times in here.
Drop your BPM to 90 - make a nice hiphop beat (with 2step sounds) and put it back up to 130-135 and you should have the perfect 2step beat.

Thanks, good info! I'm not looking to make a 2step or garage track, however, i normally work at 160-220 and i'm interesting in using these beats at those tempos, trying to create some really chopped up/rapid and glitchy garage breaks, thanks for giving me somewhere to start from!

lol
Well i tried making these swingy beats at 160+ plus and they sound terrible unless i use a really long snare (in fact they only really sound good at exactly 130 or below!) but i learned a lot about off-beats while playing around with the structures in that blog post, sounded really good with old cut up funk breaks. Definitely made me me think my current programming is too mechanical.
It does seems like my splitter-garage will never materialise because it sounds like shit
