wot do u call it? and more importantly, does anyone here make that kinda stuff? i've been trying time and time again but no matter what i produce it always sounds too... 2012? dont know how to describe it but i guess my mixdown approach is a different one.

i also wonder how people processed their breaks in that era. i suppose its quite similar to how much effort people put into resampling basslines nowadays, surely there's more to it than eq and compression?

aight, reveal your secrets then!
checked your sc, the drums in 'backwater blues' remind me of an old no u-turn tune with a ghost in the shell sample in it (cant remember the name sadly i think it was by dj trace)
basically thats the shit im talking about, loving it.
edit: on a more serious note, i actually started out making music by chopping amens but that was just cutting and pasting pre-processed amens found on the internet and sampling some metal riffs. when i try and do some proper drum edits i just dont know where to start with the workflow, most .rex files are chopped in a way that requires me to place the single hits way off grid to sound any good which renders them pretty useless and chopping shit myself always leaves me with reverb tails muddying everything up.
its that balance between gritty and clean that im striving for.

it's a matter of thinking like a drummer, thats the best way to put it, you can quantize rex files and such and work on the grid (though off the grid works too), it's just a matter of arrangement and placing fills and such carefully
basically think of putting the same attention to drums that you would to a complicated modulated bassline etc

they all sound like different styles. deadly habit was spot on. go listen to some paradox if you like drum funk though.
