I want to try to make some 2 step or garage beats or both or w/e. What are some common technical aspects of the genres? Bpm etc...

Let's say around 120 - 140 bpm , the groove is rather percussive (forget about the simple kick - hihat - snare scheme...) , use a lot of shuffled rimshots and similar percussive sounds, don't be afraid of off beat sounds, and please don't put soul samples & rnb female vocals in it because that's what destroyed it in the past

Best thing to do is to indulge yourself within the genre for few weeks.

Listen to mixes and such, to get a real feel for the sound (don't forget to dig into the old school and the offshoot genres) and then analyse single tracks, zoom into the wave forms, copy the peaks with your own sounds and then you'll get an understand of how it was constructed; do this a few times and then try and make a full track.

if you listen to enough garage you should be able to get the beat. It should be easier to get a feel for a garage beat, and then start playing them in, with your keyboard or something rather than moving audio files around so that they are off beat.

I'd say synkro and versa do a pretty good job with it.

no no.. I wasn't reffering to this kind of "soul & rnb" , this is way more atmospheric & creative and psychedelic. Love synkro although this tune you put has more dubstep groove than garage but nevermind...

But, this kind of music like this mix

now compare the synkro tune to this gar(b)age and you'll understand what I was referring to... :)
