I had a read on the Internet and am thinking of making some stands out of breeze blocks with an MDF and neoprene top.

Are they going to improve the sound a lot or are they likely to have their own faults due to my poor workmanship?

Am I much better off buying actual speaker stands? How much would a good pair cost?

Depends what size stand you want etc...I know someone off here (Mad EP?) made some speaker stands out of upside down waste paper bins with some carpet on top.

I use a 4 pack of baked beans with some bluetac on the top and bottom, seems to work.

My monitors are sitting on boxes.. one on the box of my soundcard, the other on the box of my ps3 Really want some nice speaker stands but haven't really been able to find them (or afford them of the internet), looking for something in charity shops but no luck...... so anyone who has some input on how to make some good ones... I need it.

I'm trying to find out about isolated speaker stands, as I've got krk 8s which currently sit on my desk and result in a lot resonance.

From what I read it seemed the important things were weight (concrete blocks) and seperation (free standing and neoprene or pins?), but all the speaker stands on amazon don't looks very weighty (like the ones about?) and seem to be aimed at the surround sound market.

Is the weight not necessary if you decouple them properly and they are built well?

Baked beans are no good man, you should look for something a little more chunky. Maybe dog food (the moist kind), or
a jar of pickles. Shouldn't cost you more than 40 quid on 'eBay'.

In all seriousness, if you're room isn't completely balanced maybe using headphones is a good option

No thanks these beans cost me £2 total at lidl. It's just to bring them up to ear level really, I use headphones too.

I got a lot of resonance having mine sit on the desk as well. I paid about 40 USD for these foam jobs...from Auralex ...they made a world of difference. I had a Norton Anthology of English Literature vol 1 under one speaker and vol 2 under the other and still got resonance (or Renaissance?)...well worth the 40 bucks IMO.

I have very similar speaker stands to the ones above. The wide bases make them a pain in tight spaces...I also got a ton of resonance from the speaker stands. Probably going to sell mine here soon.
