Android. Based off Linux.
iPhone. Based off Mac.
Both linux and mac are variations of unix.
linux is a better variation of unix.
Android > iPhone.

had both an iphone and android phone, I would say get the android, they are much better, except the iphone did seem to run smoother, but overall my experience with android is better

Just the phrase "based off Mac" alone is enough to completely discredit you. "Mac", or rather, Macintosh, is not an operating system or kernel, it's a model of computer. iOS is based off of the Darwin kernel, not "Mac". The Darwin kernel is Unix based.

To say that Linux is "better" than Unix is another completely meaningless statement that shows that you have no clue what you're talking about. And actually, I'd actually argue that Unix is a better choice for a mobile platform such as this

and besides, a lot more comes into play than just the operating system when you're comparing Androids and iPhones... Hardware, UI, etc.

Sure, what I said isn't exactly truth. I mixed in opinion alot, so........?
Don't act like you guys never state your opinions ;-)

If you want me to be factual, I might as well say this:
"Android is roughly based off of linux filesystem/kernel, while iOS is based off of Apple's Mac OS filesystem/kernel. The linux kernel is an open-source recreation of the unix kernel while mac's kernel is a (still closed-source) derivative of the unix kernel (the variation is called "Darwin"). Other things, such as GUI, apps, window manager, desktop environment, etc, are all unrelated and, therefore, it is not possible to make a factual comparison between them. In conclusion, my personal opinion is in favor of Linux over Mac OS and Android over iOS."

But something tells me that the SNH wouldn't be too fond of such a post either.

Linux is not a filesystem, neither is "Mac OS". Android devices use an ext4 filesystem I believe and iOS devices use FAT32, but that's irrelevant to the discussion anyways because filesystems don't really have any effect on the end user experience anyway. Also the Darwin kernel is under an open license, iOS however is not.

also these mobile OSs are so different from their desktop relatives that it really doesn't make any sense at all to claim that one is better because it's desktop counterpart is superior (in your opinion)

ANYWAYS, back to the OP. It really depends what you're looking to get out of the device to be honest. The hardware (screen, specs, camera, etc) is pretty much all better on the iPhone, but it's a closed platform (unless you jailbreak). I don't really mind jailbreaking because it's not much of a hassle, but if you want to have that level of control over your device and don't want to bother with circumventing Apple's restrictions, then maybe Android is better for you.

Also I've always liked iOS's UI more than Android's. It's more consistent across applications and easier to use (and looks better IMO). Aaaaaand I think iOS has got a better range of apps to choose from with more big name developers (although it's not a big disparity between iOS and Android)

By filesystem, I meant the structure of files and folders that make up the OS. as in '/usr/include/SDL/...' and all that jazz
not how the drive is formatted, in which case you would be correct...ext4 isn't the same thing as linux...this is something I already knew.

And you're right, the mobile counterparts are way too different to have opinions for them based off of the desktop OS's. It's almost entirely dependant upon hardware, speed, ease of use(kinda), and developers... I admit, I was incorrect in certain aspects. Thank you for correcting me...I see it as a learning opportunity.
