Im looking for some monitors as im going to take producing seriously now. Can anyone recommend some monitors i can get for starting out but which will also last me a fair amount of time.

Price range might be around £200 as im unsure whether to get a new guitar or focus on producing. Room size is alright.

Then just get some of the cheaper behringer monitors, they're pretty nice for the price. But like Soulstep said 5" monitors aren't going have much in the bass department. Might be worth waiting till you have about $400, (w/e that is in £)

Meh I'd still go with 5s because 8s are out of your price range and between spectral analyzers and feeling the bass through your desk it shouldn't be too hard to fine tune.

Right ive had a look on google and i think it would be best to go with 5s.

I have a friend who swears by his Alesis M1 Active 520's. All his tunes are sick and is renowned for his mixdowns. He makes D&B and is currently featured on the front page of the Drum & Bass Arena store (D.Side) so they can't be too bad...

You can pick them up for £170 (maybe even less if you find a b-stock pair) and they have a built in USB audio interface.

I too am looking for new monitors, instead of making a new thread I'll ask here.
I need something that can be used at low/mid volumes and still have decent all round responce (on my current speakers I can only hear the bass when they are cranked up) as I am moving to a flat next year for University and I don't want to piss off my neighbours all the time. Willing to spend about £300 on a pair of monitors, I already have a Audio Interface.

I'm also interested in a Subwoofer (for use during the day only ). Wouldn't really want to spend more than £150-200 on this.

Once again sorry for hijacking the thread but theres no point in cluttering the board up with more monitor threads

Thanks. I'm looking at the Yamaha Hs50m and the Yamaha Hs80m atm, just not sure if the 5" will pump out enough bass at lowish volumes or if the 8" would be better

I went with the Yamaha MSP5's...the clarity is outstanding. They're the older model, but from what I read pretty much everyone uniformly prefers them. Best thing is that you can get a pair used for around 200 (I think mine were 215 shipped).

LOL, that doesnt mean shit, monitors dont make you produce good, Mosca only used reason and headphones for ages! It's possible to get good mixdowns without having good monitors, you just need to know what you are doing, and check mixes on other systems and against other tunes. Saying that though, I dont think there is that much difference between monitors like. I have Yamaha HS80s so I'd say go with the HS50s, Ive heard they are very honest. If you can go somewhere and listen to them though, do that.

Well nah I mean, you said he has good mixdowns, so the monitors he uses must be good, but he may just know how to mixdown good. Tbh though they are all much of a muchness, just try and go check them out and pick the ones you like the sound of best.

Surely with monitors you want the ones that sound flattest, not the ones that sound best

Yeah, everything I said about his music is pretty irrelevant I guess

Basically they are good monitors for the money and they come highly recommended

I really feel "flatness" only benefits the small number of people who already know what they're doing-as in-it's only real purpose is to be maybe help you subtly fine tune a certain frequency range to polish an already good mix. I doubt 95% of producers can even recognize what it sounds like though.
