AKG 240's

My headphones are kaput, so now I'm forced to use garbage ones I bought for $10 a decade ago and my mixes are getting extraordinarily bad for it. It doesn't help that the acoustics in the room is basically landmines of random bassy resonance.

I'm looking at the AKG k240. Any experience with them?

yeah solid build and great sound. Not incredibly accurate mixdown wise, but no headphones really are so yeah

I've had them for a couple of years now. I think they are pretty solid headphones.

Cool. I don't need anything ridiculous, and the Sennheisers seem to have a terrible price>quality ratio, at least in the $100 range

my mixdowns have improved about a million times with them especially when used alongside a good pair of monitors - give you proper sore ears though after a couple of hours producing or listening. would still recommend them though!

Hi I know these headphones well.

Positives:

Comfortable
Non fatiguing
Light
Quite neutral for mixing (tonally)

Negatives:

Not super hi fi
Not much sub bass
Not great for hearing details.
Hard to drive (high impedance)

I think I would go for Beyer DT-990 next time round for a change.
If at all possible have a listen to both.

cheers

i have them, they're good, very confortable and clean sounding, amazing in reverb and delays, but, yeah, not much sub bass, plusover you will need a preamp because of the impendance. I use a crappy cheap 19 euro behringer preamp, but is decent enough. I honestly prefer these headphones for listening some particular types of music with a big focus on the concept of 'space' (such as ambient/drone/dubtechno/microwave) over production purposes; they are definitely good for those occasional night ispirations and ideas, but i can't suggest you to mix whole productions trough them

I love my AKG 240's Ive had the MK1 version for about 5 years and no complaints yet. The cord is a bit long but it is replaceable - these things are comfortable and extremely hard to break. Really flatline response for headphones too.

and as far as the need for a pre-amp goes: wouldnt your audio interface work as an amp device for your headphones?

yea I don't quite get that either. But my soundcard is also a hardware sampler with the ability to boost the internal dB levels so I don't think I need a pre-amp. Unless theres some other mystical application of pre-amps besides giving a better range of volume?

anyways, got the phones, they definitely fit the bill. Might go fancier in a couple of years though.

No, but from my experience I have to drive the 240's way more than my Sony 7506's. A headphone amp can help with this. With a soundcard interface I found that while the volume would be at like 4 or 5 to drive the 7506's, it would be at something like 11 or 12 to drive the 240's.

THIS. :W:
soundcard's headphone preamps are usually pretty weak, i have both focusrite saffire 6 (great) and lexicon alpha ( :u: ) and they're pretty useless for those 240s.
mine is this one http://www.thomann.de/it/behringer_ha400.htm , and i can get insanely high levels without too much distortion and with really great sound quality, so you won't need to invest a shitload of money in high-end headphone preamp.

clearly with more quality products i think you will get even more clarity and accurate sound image and gain, but prices are outofthisworld. http://www.thomann.de/it/violectric_hpa ... aerker.htm so for occasional productions and for listening some music you can go with cheaper products :)

I don't have any trouble with my NI Audio Kontrol 1 and K240s.
