So yeah title says it, what do you guys use to get fat sounding basses for a relatively low cost as in I can't afford massive

There's a couple of ways:

Take your bass line and make one or two slightly different variations of it so it they different and layer all of them together.

Use a stereo widener to bring out more of the sound.

Take the synth you are most comfortable with or take the time to learn one synth
Download free chorus/distortion/waveshaping/reverb/delay/compression plugs (google bedroom producers blog)
layering/eq/compression
resampling
octaves/unison/detuning/multiple synths or waveforms

Try using the Native Instruments Reaktor 5 Player with the Mikro Prism, really good synth for free, I think.

A stereo widener either influences the timing and pitch of the channels (a free example is Voxengo's StereoTouch) or it divides the sound into mid and side channels by finding the difference between left and right channels, then influences the relative volumes of the mid and side channels.

I've used a "stereo expander" before that inverts either the left or right channel. However if you combine both channels they cancel out.

yeah id stay away except for pads n strings etc. just flips the polarity on one channel. like 180 degree phase shift. just learned that today

Alright sweet I'll try all of these out, thanks guys:)! Also I was considering getting the Sausage Fattener Plugin which is about 30 bucks, I've heard its reallyyyy good. Any input on that?

The trick I did before I had massive was to take advantage of the 20 min demo. But you gotta be quick

Basically go in, make your sound (hopefully shouldn't take more than 5 - 10 mins tops) after that bounce it out, the rest of the time use to bounce out variations on the original sound. After that you have your raw sounds down, you can either process the audio and use it as is or..... load massive back up again (demo resets giving you a further 20 mins to work with) and use this time to make another sound to layer on top of the original.

I like this method because it drops you straight into resampling technique which is a very powerful tool, + the satisfaction that you are making the sounds without having to resort to piracy.

I will do this.

3xosc or audacity...both are free. 3xosc is free as long as you buy FL Studio. Audacity is free regardless.

Use Logic's ES2 synth. Plenty of tutorials on youtube.

I'd advise using Logic's own VSTs (I have no knowledge of Logic but I'm assuming it comes with some form of synth whether additive, subtractive or FM etc.) and applying techniques from tutorials that use similar synths. Also look for some free distortion and saturation plugins (CamelCrusher, FerricTDS and TesslaSE should start you off nicely). Finally layering your main bass with a good sub and careful EQ and compression will work wonders.

not to sound like a twat by advertising anything but iv been working on an easy to use wavedrawing + FM synth (VSTi) for the past 6 months that is made for brostep basses/complex sounds in mind.
not gona comment on how it sounds (the song in my sig has a couple growls from the synth)
il try make a demo video of it soon since im looking to release it as donationware this summer.

grab an 808, slap it in a sampler, send it to a bus or two, distort,detune,verb,eq, distort, filter etc.....optionally rinse and repeat. Gotta be one of the most classic ways to get a fat pounding bass.

I'm not the only one! I thought it was 30 minutes? I've been trying to do this with Reason also to try out the distortions and hopefully be able to find a decent alternative. But I'm not liking the layout of everything and I'm gonna have to watch a few videos first lol

Yeah I agree with everyone, the ES2 is a sweet synth for sure!! And rad thanks for the recommendations guys, I'll definitely check the plugins mentioned out:), thanks!!
