I've been doing a lot of sound design lately to get my chops up, and what I was wondering is if there are alternative methods to emulate massive's scream filter, without massive? I've got a bunch of waveforms I chopped up, would love to be able to see what I can come up with "from the ground up" so to speak. Thought it would be nice to figure a way to make those "brostep" screams without massive. I google searched the forum and couldn't really find anything, but if there is already a thread please be so kind as to direct me there. Thank you all.

Maybe generate a really busy tone with massive, look at a frequency analyser then put it through the scream filter and compare the two frequency analysers to see what the filter is doing to it then attempt to recreate it

Looking at an analyser will not really help in the way of trying to recreate the characteristics.

I don't use Massive but have done before. If I remember rightly the scream control on the filter has something to do with the frequency of a driven feedback loop. The resonance is obviously the amount of signal going through this loop so to recreate it you would need to find or make a filter which works in a similar way. I'm not sure how confident you are at trying to make your own but there are a few programs which you could trial which allow you to make your own filters amongst other things.

Alternatively you could use a modular synth, some of which have quite advanced routing options where you could set up a filter and save it as a preset if it has the ability to import samples or let audio pass through it. Hope this helps!

Don't exactly know what you're asking, but it seems to me that you can make a "screaming bass" using any synthesizer and just dropping a formant-filter (such as forma-8) on its mixer track. I personally just use Circle VST (a synthesizer) and it has a built in "mouth filter" (formant filter). Hope i helped

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try that. While I grew up listening to skream, benga, dmz, etc....I'm not a hater of what dub has transitioned to. I think a lot of the sound design aspect is interesting, though I don't think I could listen to a three hour brostep set either. I'm gonna keep plugging at this and I will post if I come up with anything, I'm sure there are others who would like to know as well.

I'm mostly interested in doing this because I think being reliant on Massive kind of boxes me in at times, even with all its waveforms, filters, routing options etc. Back to my DAW!

so yeah thats basically it, but kinda hard to replicate. i don't think you'll be able to recreate it even in a modular environment, at least i have no idea how you'd do that. simply putting a pitch shifter in your feedback chain won't do the trick (you could still try that of course)
