either try using another control param or just modulate it in clip view instead of arrangement. just go to your midi clip, click "midi balh ablah blah" and find your modwheel and draw some shit in

on the "master" tab i beleive it is, youll find a little list with midi cc values on a chart, find the one for mod wheel and change the number to something that isnt already on that list. should work

Wait, don't you just click the mod wheel and then it pops up on the track lane for automation?

I thought you were asking how to modulate between the X&Y faders. The four quadrants, that's what I am wondering how to automate.

Edit: I don't have a midi controller, how can I map the mod wheel without one?

Ok So I have some modulated parameters and I opened midi mapping

How do I map to CC1 and CC2?

I am currently having the same problem mapping the mod wheel.

I tried looking around in fm8 for another solution.. I'm not sure why when i try to map it and click on the "mod wheel" nothing happens, but it works for pretty much every other parameter.

What are you trying to map it to? A macro knob?

yeah a macro knob. but first you have to click "configure" and then choose a parameter within fm8, I click on the mod wheel and it should pop up on the fm8 tab in Ableton so I can draw in the automations from there in the arrangement view.... which at this point.. I am not 100% sure I would need to map it to a macro knob. although I don't understand fm8 completely it's still pretty new to me. it has worked this way for me for a variety of other automations.

I just messed around for a couple minutes and it didn't want to map for me either. Must only be available to modulate when you have a MIDI keyboard with those actual wheels...

You can ghetto map it but it isnt exactly the same as the mod wheel. Lets say you want to control the operators with the mod wheel instead of mapping each one through ableton. In the mod tab, set your mod parameter to 100 in the matrix for each operator. Map the 100 box of each mod setting in the matrix and then map them all to a macro knob. You have to change the macro range from .5 to 1 because 0 will equal -99 in FM8. The only problem is that it isn't a smooth transition like the mod wheel, rather it goes up in notches from 0 to 100%.

This comes in handy because you can then adjust your carriers in the FM matrix without having to mess around in ableton to tweak your sound. The mod values work like a percent so if you leave them at 100 and you put your carrier at 50 lets say, th mod wheel will take it from 0 to 50.

Ah...here is another option that I forgot about but it doesn't get you to a macro knob. If you map everything to the mod wheel in FM8, there is an automation envelope in Ableton to automate it. Double click on your FM8 midi clip, look at your envelope box, and select modulation in the second dropdown menu and then you can draw in your automations.

Fm8 should be pronounced as F-m8.

I've found a to macro map everything fm8 within ableton's macro mapping. My problem is that when I'm trying to change min/max the highest it'll go is 1.0 when if should be 100. Any ideas??
