Just wanted to ask, is it possible to run NI Massive off a USB?

Why would you want to do that?

Not as far as I know.
The database files get installed into your program files as well as registry updates and important system files.
It's not just a single dll like some vsts.

@wub: I don't want to get around the licensing restrictions as much as I want to just use Massive on my school laptop (yes, you heard me. I go to school) so I can experiment on the go without paying for another copy of Massive.... oh wait.

You can install their plugins on 2 machines, and Komplete on 3 machines.
Just try it, it will be quicker than contacting support that's for sure.

You can actually just install it on your laptop too if you want.

Yeah... the thing is... the school laptops don't have cd drives, and I cannot run setups without admin rights... :L

Ask your teacher to install it, or give you the admin rights?

If you can't use a disc, then download the Massive demo installer exe from the website, and then register it with your info. Actually, it should just work if you copy the disc contents onto your flash drive.

You can't just run as admin, you'll need the admin details to do that.

yeah... you need admin's password (i.e. teacher)... And it's got tracking applications and hardware, so if i log into local admin somehow, they find out and I get in deep sh*t.

I'll just have to ask the TSO (IT person) to let me install Massive... Thanks for the help anyways

You'd be better of getting a freeware synth like Ugo Rez, Oatmeal, Crystal, Tal Noisemaker, Tyrell N6 or fmmf.
Lots of freeware options with dll only.
You just copy the dll to usb and use Reaper installed to the usb.

What's the best and most "Massive-like" free synth in your opinion?

chances are your not going to be able to do this unless you know how to hack computers, the admins will block you from doing anything mildly interesting

Yeah... You're actually not allowed to run .exe files (or any executable file, really), but us students found a hack (it's a .jar file [which are allowed for some reason] that injects a dll file into explorer.exe) the only thing is that most things you cannot install since they require admin rights....

Jar files are just like zip files, they're just compressed files.
Just get a dll only synth.

I work on a system that is admin locked.
I install Reaper at home on a usb and copy all my relevant vsts to a vst folder on the usb.

It works well and it doesn't call back to the server.

Which one would you recommend for me though? (I'd like something that I smoothly transition to from Massive)

I'm not sure, I don't use Massive.
I'd say Oatmeal is very versatile and will teach you synthesis.
Rez may be easier to operate.
