use 140 so you don't have to bother with 1/32 notes

when you start to write a track......do you set your tempo to 70 BPM or 140 BPM? is there a difference to achieve different results?
I notice that datsik and others will make tracks at 70BPM, but some skream and benga tunes are in 140BPM.....whats the difference from a producers standpoint.
I always seem to start at 140, but was going to try to make a track at 70 and see what happens.....just wondering if anyone else had this question.
thank you.

tbh it doesnt matter if you choose 70 you can go slower if you choose 140 you can go faster considering that lots of synths have 16/1 as last and maybe 1/64 as fastest but that are both really extrem lfo speeds to begin with

Depends on the feel of the track.

140.. Purely because I lay out my drums in the sequencer and I'm used to how it will sound at this point

It's really the same thing, you just have to place hits later or sooner and adjust things like LFO and arps accordingly. 70 would allow for easier programming of fills. Best way to answer this is just to try it and experiment.
I prefer 136 though.

140. 70 isn't very logical. You can do all the same stuff at 140, in more space, and add more detail inbetween parts.
Why raise this question?

If it isn't at 140 bpm then it isn't real dubstep, or even real music for that matter

reason starts up with 120 bpm, it's faster to go up then down
Sequencer speed can be adjusted so no diffrence really

I ran into this dilemma when I first started just because I was used to programming hip hop drums; snare on 5 and 13 on a 16 step drum machine as opposed to just the 9 for the halftime dubstep feel. Makes more sense to do 140 so the synths sound more normal. But no one will stop you from doing 70 bpm.

if by "notice" you mean you read those tempos on traktor or a similar piece of software, those tunes are being analyzed by a beat detection algorithm
Which is no indication whatsoever of the tempo they were built at.
The algorithms detect amplitude spikes over time and put int on a beat grid. Whether they come up with x, 2x, or .5x is near meaningless
Unless you heard or read somewhere directly that those producers wrote at 70, i'd just say you're wrong.

Hey xbubbax,
Ask your self, what really makes a good solid dubstep beat... The answer is the shuffle swing !
How can one emulate those shuffling beats common in Jazz- Reggae - Trap Music snare rolls?
Well, one great way to capture the SWAG is by changing your time signature from 1/4 to 1/3. First you want to change your BPM to........yes, 210 BPM!! ( dropping gems).
You will have to change your bars from 16 beats to 12 beats, but you will notice the added swag is Boss. Additionally you can bounce the audio files at 70 -140 -210- 280 and lego the stems in a fresh project.
This also helps you jump from style to style, want a dnb break rise right before that huge drop? change the bars back to 16 prior to the drop.
Hope this helps you make your choice!
All the best,
Roswell

^I think they just turned the swing up in FL's step sequencer, 3/4 doesn't really sound like that.

The swing function will add additional swag, especially when working 1/3 at 210 bpm. Try it, you will notice the difference.
Sacred ratios 70 x 3 = 210

so you're producing halftime 3/4, so more or less 6/4 halfstep with a snare on 3 kind of feel?
