Hey guys, i've been hearing that a external hard drive can help the processing of audio.
Is this true or just marketing BS, if yes then how does that work?

Hard drives dont help the proccesing of audio.

What they can do is free up your machine, such as having your programs on your main harddrive and project files and other things you dont regurly access on the external harddrive.

Maybe the advert you saw was for the SSL harddrives... a faster harddrive can make the accessing of data quicker which in turn might make accessing large sample folders quicker but part from that doenst sound likely.

I think what the op is referring to is an external audio interface

Actually it slows it down tbh. SSL maybe faster but they still have read/write limits and are expensive... prices coming down little by little though.

I meant an ssl as a main hard drive rather then an external..

You know how you can run an OS off RAM (temporarily) cant you do something similar with a SSL raid configuration??

Oops, we are talking about SSDs right, Solid State Drives? Not SSL... Serato Scratch Live? Solid State Logic? Damn these acronyms...

If SSD, yeah you can but they have read/write limitations and a lifespan of a few years give or take. They were lasting about 1 to 2 years with heavy use when they first came out. It's probably doubled or even tripled by now though. I haven't kept up with them because of prices, and when I had one I didn't notice that much of a difference to justify the original prices. It's worth looking into today though.

Flash drives could be used to free up your ram disk depending what system you have and how old your computer is, and i dont think thats possible. just get a new sound card :W:
