				for example if im trying to remake a song and i have no idea what the bpm is,

				Tap the tempo in your daw this should get you pretty close. Then put the track on a audio track and make the needed adjustments by looking where the 1st beats fall on the timeline. I never do this, but this is how i'd tackle it.

				find a downbeat in the sample, place on a downbeat in sequencer, set bpm to your best estimate, then play.  tap along to the music and adjust your bpm until your click is exactly on beat with the music.

yeah exactly so if you know what genre it is you know at least some idea of the range of bpm it is

These days I just use an app on my phone. You can try the old fashioned way and use a stop watch, count the beats for 30 seconds and then double it.

				I had a pella i didn't know the tempo for so i found the original on youtube and kept hitting play on the downbeat and slowing daw down untill i got it bang on.A bit of a half arsed way of doing it but i had the bpm down in a few minutes and the pella fitted like a dream.

				Just use the metronome and figure out if it's too slow or too fast and adapt. 
The only problem is with non electronic samples because they often aren't consistent in their tempo.
