Whens the right time to invest in monitors?

Just wondering on what everones opinions are regarding "the right time" to invest in some studio monitors. I'm at the point where I think I've got some good tunes and it's hard to share it with people without it translating poorly, thats my thought.

What do you guys think? A lot of people aren't making any money til much later in their musical careers, seems like it's better to invest in monitors after you've got your music where you want it to be, hard to spread your music when it translates like a 1980's kung-fu movie.

it's amazing what a flat response and unflattering sound will make you think about your fave tunes

Whenever you think you can buy some and want to take your music production more serious :)

This lol, some songs that I really liked on my shitty computer speakers sounded atrocious on my monitors.

Depends on your current setup. Are you using flat headphones? If you have flat headphones, then use those until you think they aren't enough. I mix on headphones and my tunes translate really well. There's only one system I've heard them on that didn't translate well, but I'm pretty sure something is wrong with that system. I also plan on getting some analog gear and a treated room before monitors.

As soon as you can afford a pair, as long as you have a PC that can run your software and such without crashing/choppy playback
In my mind it goes PC --> Software --> headphones/ Monitors ---> room treatment/more exotic software/Analog synths and such

Yeah, when you've also got spare dolla to spend on room treatment.
You can do great mixdowns on good headphones. Crazy high quality mixing/mastering is done
in studios.

What headphones do you use? I actually started a threat that got really deep on gearslutz, made me realize monitors are worthless wtihout room treatment and with money tight it just isn't an option at the moment.

what cans u got mayn. good advice too

I have two pairs.
Shure SRH940 sound much better and more flat. These are also more comfortable and generally better. Unfortunately, they are also fragile. Mine are currently broken and I'm going to send them in for repair soon.
I also have the Sennheiser HD280 Pros. Awesome cans. Very solidly built. Still flat, but not as flat. More head clamp. Will make your ears hurt after a while. The main positive in these is that you could use them as a kick-ball and not worry about breaking them.

Beyerdynamic DT770's, 880's, or 990's are also very very nice. I don't have any of those, nor do they suit me, but they are great.
