I'm sure it's probably ultra simple and I'm way over complicating it, but i'm looking to replicate the intense 'BAOWWW' synth sound featuring in Pulse X. I've been fiddling around with different waveforms and modulations in ES2 but can't get the harshness that brings the pain in those tunes!!
Any advice?

Pulse X is just a distorted 808 kick. There's a video on YouTube of Youngstar putting it together in Rebirth.

A VirusTI is an incredible tool that can create even the toughest of basslines.
Grab yourself a sample pack.

Check fracture and neptune vids on organic beats on youtube. I can't be bothered to find the link but they run an 808 through the mackie desk with gain cranked and it sounds delish.

Yeah, though a big part of the sound comes from the amazing filters and fx on the E-mu Ultra sampler they use. Pretty much the signature sound of an entire era of dnb. But for the regular distorted 808, I'd try to use an overdrive pedal type effect and mix it with a dry version to retain the bass as you might lose a lot of low end in the process. Also make sure there's plenty of decay on the sample or synth you use for the 808.

808 with lotsa envelope->pitch and some distortion or waveshaping.
i got that sound from a reaktor ensemble, forgot what its called but it has a 'dnb' preset that sounds almost exactly like the pulse x bass

great shout, i'm playing around with the guitar pedal board in Logic now, tried adding some classic wah which totally pimped the whole sound out

distorted squares with a quick cutoff envelope bit like a stab youd do for a house tune. standard grime bizness.

That with a pitch envelope gets that BIAOW type sound

protip: theres a goldbaby battery pack called attack of the alien drummachine or somethign like that. it has several sounds like that, i think one of it was used in alias - gladiator
Soundcloud
I never ended up finish this but its a pretty similar sounding bass imo
I just recorded a square wave over a couple of bars in massive (you can add a lil bit of distortion or w/e but c note works best)
put it into operator... you could use any sampler really
Pitch it down a bit
Res all the way up
Low pass filter at around 70hz
Env and Velocity Up a bit
Then adjust the attack, release and decay of the filter
I find 300ms to be the golden number for 140bpm stuff
