Drums in Logic Pro

Hey guys,

Just wondered what the general consensus is on doing drums in Logic. I'm finding it a bit harder coming from drum racks in Ableton. I've seen a few people just loading up each type of drum in an individual channel and dragging and dropping samples instead of onto a piano roll.

These seems incredibly tiresome and fiddly. What's wrong with just using Ultrabeat or something with your own samples?

Thanks.

Its actually a hell of a lot easier just draggin samples in and editing and duplicating them from there without having to set up ultrabeat the whole time. But thats just me....

Yeah i just tend to drag into the arrange and create groups. If you do this you can end up with many many channels so looking into using folders can make things easier. Also i change the grid quantise value for moving hits about and merge a lot of regions for more fuckery in the sample edit window.Once you get use to the way things flow i think it's a great way of working.
I do use battery 3 sometimes too which is far better than ultrabeat.

Once you get used to working with audio samples in the arrange page you can do some pretty neat stuff quickly:

Personally I go through cycles of only doing drums in audio and then only using midi with exs 24. Either method works and there is nothing to stop you from doing both at the same time.

I can't stand making drum patterns in audio based daws. I use step sequencer vsts but I just bought Maschine. Hope it's better.

I dont use Ultrabeat, I hate it, Ill either put samples on the arrange, or put them in EXS24 to play beats in, or just use some exs24 samples.

Theres nothing wrong with using ultrabeat, not that I know of, but I'm just used to loading stuff into EXS24, its easier to pitche stuff then, and also you can fuck with envelopes really easily and have all the other parameters at your control. If I dont want any of that thoguh, and kno where I want the hit to land, then Ill just drag it onto the arrange, but i do prefer to start out with a beat by playign it in, rather than dropping a sample in and moving it around until i get a beat i want.

This was true, the attack time could never be set to 0. I think its was like .0001ms or something, which of course does actually make a difference, though I read somewhere they've fixed this in a recent version. Heres the link, and the poster David knows what he's talking about. Ive used these forums for help plenty of times.

edit: Generally I still use EXS anyways

Yeah, ultrabeats aight, but you have to fiddle with the amp envelope to get things sounding smooth, otherwise you get weird pops and such.
