What makes a track good for you?

I've been trying to introduce my wife to dubstep, but she dislikes certain things about dance music that define what dance music is; she particularly dislikes how repetitive any sort of dance music is.

I really appreciate a good snare drum, and I prefer songs that show progression throughout the song ( ie Loefah's Midnight -- the bass structure changes throughout the song, as elements are added, removed, and changed).

What parts of a tune make it a real banger to everyone else on DSF?

Oh yeah, I mean I make all my choices on music as to whether the snare is good or not

yea, bassweight is a good one, but I've never been to a night before, so I can't really comment on it.

i like deepness coupled with some sort of slight experimental edge.

I dont like predictable music- it has to do at least something different/innovative.

but similairly i dont like experimental music fo rthe sake of experiemntal music- now that shit jsut annoys me as it is the height of self-indulgence, its gotta still "make sense" and obey some musical rules.

harmony and melody are also important, too much electronic music, sounds like it was made on a computer with no feeling, sorry if htis is a cliche, but more needs to sound more human.

Personally I love the repetition in some dubstep songs as it get me into kind of a trance. Sleeper's zombies for example.

I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not, but what I mean by good snare... is that if there is a song that is borderline great in all other aspects, a beastly snare can push it over that line into greatness for me. The snare is a big part of the beat structure of a track, in my opinion far more important to sound good than the kick drum.

I don't need a catchy lead line or anything, but some sort of melodic element is nice. I'm a big fan of spacey, vague string lines a la oldskool Metalheadz DNB.

Interesting sound design. Space is very important, especially in dubstep (less is more) Proper sub-weight (duh, too bad none of the new 'dungeon' producers can hold a candle to Loefah sub-weight) Progression is big for me, I love songs that start somewhere and end somewhere else entirely, and a sweet second drop can really add some nice flair to a track. I enjoy tunes that are dark, or "rude" in a sense, even though tunes written in major can still sound rude (lots of Butterz stuff) Classic house and lots of UK Funky bores me to death, because it doesn't have that ruffness that I look for. Percussion is of the highest importance imo. It can make or break a track. I love synchopated, swung out stuff, or intricate tribal drums a la Shackleton. Rolling 4x4 drums doesn't = tribal though, even though so many producers seem to think so these days.

this is why I love dungeon so much, sleeper's tunes in particular.

For me it's usually about whether the track either engages me emotionally or takes my mind and imagination to another place. Of course a lot of tunes I like are just fun and let you live in the now, but I think the greatest music makes you envision a certain time, place or feeling.

find a sample that goes like:
zzzziiiiiooooon
then get some funky hat/cymbal work goin, k?
get an unknown marvin gaye b-side
insert into edison, chop randomly
use one random chop and paste into the song 14-16 times throughout.
finishing touches, you can get creative with it, either have some cool rave air horns or a badman voice sayin something like 'miracles, miracles miracles,' or 'badman like dem best tingz"
