Does anyone, anywhere, know the very first dubstep track? I know it started in the late 90s, but does anyone have any idea what the very first dubstep track was? I looked on Discogs, the oldest said 1996, but it was some "Jazzstep" thing. And it didn't really even sound like Dubstep. And also for some reason a Madonna album showed up...

there is no first, only a blurring of genres that ended up becoming something different...
sure we can look back and find similar sounds and styles that may sound like some of the tunes today, but that doesnt make them dubstep
shouts to blackdown for the info
Awesome, thanks. I just realized, a few of those songs I actually used in a classic dubstep mix. Soundcloud

While I agree with most of the replies here, and there's no 'first track', the early Horsepower Productions stuff is regarded by some people as the first dubstep. Gorgon Sound is a great example, but again, it's impossible to call it one of the 'first dubstep tracks' really. Such a good tune though!
Probably biased cuz it's my favorite dubstep choon, but I'd say that it was stripped off of the straight up garage enough by here.
Like, I'll include Horsepower and El-B and shit as dubstep, but I'll draw the line RIIGHT before 'Touch' by DJ Abstract where I'd say it's totally dubstep.
And I love the whole notion that an American was the first to do straight up dubstep.
