It all comes down to personal preference, I myself prefer Ableton Live but a lot of people like to start eith FL Studio. Just download some trials and see what works best for you. Btw, there's a Production section on this forum, there's a few threads on starting off so have a look there

There is no best software.. it all comes down to personal preference and your workflow. Like ^^ said download some trials and get your hands dirty! It'll be fun :)

Definitely confusing! But all DAW's practically do the same thing.. some may just be a little bit better at certain things than others.

http://www.reaper.fm/ is probably the most affordable DAW, and has a similar layout to DAW's like Cubase/Logic.

FL Studio is what I learned first, it is very easy to learn and such a strong DAW these days as well! I almost wish I stayed with it ;) But I moved over the Cubase a few years back because I really enjoy working with audio and I feel it really speeds up my workflow and boosts my creativity. I use a bit of Logic on my laptop too but mostly just for beats/experimentation.

So literally just download some trials and get started, forget it being confusing and start building some beats! Time will fly by.. see you in a couple of years :)

in response of PM from OP, might be helpful for anyone else.

Like I said there definitely is no "better" DAW!
