More carrers through music production?

I've pretty much skipped this years semester of college for the reasoning of not being able to find a school that offers exactly what I'm looking for. And the places that fit what I'm looking for always seem kind of gimmicky. So I was wondering, if I continue to solo produce, and learn about music on my own for the next year, or years to come, what sort of careers and knowledge in music production get me besides the chance to become a big artist?
Was thinking of learning mastering from books and peers and starting my own mastering business.

Is mastering something you can't read up on? I know it's sound, but there is always helpful things to read. I dunno.

I've never really pursued any other field strongly besides music. Though before music I was very much into 3D modeling & animation.
Though I'd like to clarify that I'm focusing more on Audio, than music. I want to build a resume and find a job doing audio for movies/games, and on the side do music.

fair enough plan, good luck to you.
please don't try and start a mastering house after reading a few books.

It's like saying you can read a book to teach you how to paint. The book might show examples of paintings and teach you things about colours, but it's no substitute from getting a brush and having at it on a canvas.

I think reading up on stuff helps though, I`ve learnt 50% of what I know that way (or being told etc i.e. using other knowledge I haven`t created myself) - the other 50% is personal experience...
Some things you just can`t predict or apply formulas to though; that`s when you have to use intuition, which is probably the hardest thing to learn I think.

Mastering is still all about experience.
