Darkstep?

So I've really been getting into the whole "Darkstep movement" n' such, and i want some advice / oppinions.
What exactly defines Darkstep? I've heard people say that its just a darker sounding drum n' bass, but alot of it seems to have Dubstep elements in them.
This is a pretty open discussion, so say what you will.
I just want to know what peoples oppinions on this are, and what you would label "Darkstep" or what would qualify as.

Hmm? Wasn't darkstep like dark techstep? Limewax, Tech Itch, SPL, DJ Hidden.

Don't really know what defines it. Just.. dark techy dnb.

That term is pretty much bogus.
But some 'dark' sounding dubstep comes from Vivek, Distance etc..

A name doesn't have to be anything...labels etc are kinda unnecessary. But TBH if you've identified some elements that you like why not build on those and develop a sound? Doesn't need to have to adhere to a label...more a concept.

Perfect example...techstep was just a sub genre of DnB.

I reckon if you slowed down some Neuro DnB tracks with Paulstretch (so as to reduce artifacts) you could probably get them signed as Dungeon Dubstep tracks.

Actually fuck it, I might give that a try. What's a suitably Dungeon/Neuro sounding name?

Just make what you like to make and let the hipsters label it ex post facto.

Do you higga

:cornlol:

Although good luck with drums - that's the one thing I have yet to make Paulstretch work for (but it's aces for pretty much anything else.) I've tried all kinds of setting combinations and the closest was Hamming with not too much stretch (<8x) - it helps if you overlay the original unstretched drum sample at the beginning to keep the attack as well.

Anyway... (blather blather blather)

As regards techstep/darkstep/stepstep/whatever label you wanna slap on it... there are other great tracks by DnB producers well-known and not, but the early No U-Turn stuff, especially the Torque LP, is the quintessential expression of the form.

Well some people call hardstyle with a darker vibe "darkstep"
But people are giving Matta's "Fade" the label as well. Which is dubstep.
I'm just confused. O_o

Nothing to be confused about dude. Some people make up stupid subgenres for EVERYTHING with names that already exist. But it's pretty much standard nomenclature for dark drum & bass.
