Hey all,

Need to pick your fine brains here... If someone could explain/link-to-tutorial the concept of vocoders and this whole carrier in a left/right input vs modulator in a left/right input. Hopefully you know what I'm getting at. Bonus points if anyone can specifically relate this to Robotronic. I'm running Ableton if that's of interest (obviously the ableton vocoder sort of eliminates the need for this knowledge - I just drop-down and grab my carrier). I imagine this concept works a little differently from one vocoder to another, but from what I've gathered lately, the idea seems to have some degree of consistency. And, yes, I've read my manuals... Heh.

Ok simple answer, a carrier is a base sound, say a saw wave. The modulator is say a vocal sample that you rule through the carrier to make it sound "robotic". Got me?

Ah sorry, I haven't explained clearly what I meant... 'routing' is the key word I should have used here. I get the carrier/modulator distinction, and how a vocoder works and everything. This is a problem of usage. I'm writing this away from my computer so I can't find a direct quote from the manual, but this alludes to what I mean: "The modulator signal can be derived from either or both channels of the audio input ... the carrier can use either the left or right input channel"

The more I read, the more I'm becoming convinced this is such a painfully simple concept, resulting in me slapping myself.

Ok well I can't help you there, I use reason so I just connect the cables and boom

Usually the modulator is panned 100% left and carrier panned 100% right (or the other way around), then sent into the same channel. You then tell it which side is carrier and which is modulator.

Vocoders are good for making that modulated robotic vocal effect :3 Come to think of it, I really need to get my old Vocoder VST back... I think Sampler can do it, in Ableton, but I haven't really sat down to experiment with it...
