I like my kicks to be punchy and there but not in your face overpowering all of the other elements. I like the low passed dubby kicks, so yeah my snares/rims are almost always louder.

There's a good ableton live preset that make the snare really loud and punchy

Loudness is difficult to measure for this kind of thing so i think it's very hard to say when they're very different sounds. Peak level has very little to do with it, and frequency content and the dynamic shape of the sound can alter how loud something is perceived by the human ear quite a lot.

Generally speaking your kick sound be louder and not your snare. Although this is if your going for the clean finish mix down, but it can be down to personal preference. That being said you will never really see a successful (in terms of charts) song with a snare louder that a kick.

Don't think I ever made the snare louder than the kick. Whole different genre though.

lately our snares have been getting much louder sounding then the kick, but when you look on the EQ they are very similar, because the snare is filling up a lot more of the spectrum than the kick is, but the kick is still very punchy in its own right, but this is just because of the type of dub step we make, i think a lot of it comes down to your own style.

Exellent point. To be honest it just needs to sound the way you like. My snare might be louder on fixed velocity (i play a sampler) but I never use it. Almost all of my tracks I play the beat like its a drum set, it might be louder in the chorus but really its different volumes in every part, im talking a small amout. For example, a kick drum roll, if the roll fades up in volume it sounds more natural, thats what I like in my tracks though, not for everyone. Most of the time the kick and the snare even each other out, accenting certain.
