To add to Wub's compositional challenges post (
http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=253531 )...
I thought I would start a thread about other ways to get oneself to approach sound differently...having stumbled across one recently.
I've been spending most of my free time ripping a stack of newly acquired wax to my HD... which lead to ripping other records from my crates... which lead me to realize, one of my favorite records, I had accidentally been listening to at 33 (instead of 45) for YEARS. It was a crazy realization, but it has lead me to spend a LOT of time listening to my 45s at 33..
Naturally, some of the vocal tracks sound a bit twisted (tho some sound amazing)... but the big mindfuck was spending a whole day or two, only listening to music at the "wrong" speed. And it has given me lots of ideas... not just from the sounds themselves (cos I already pitchshift my samples a lot)... but rather the pacing and breath that occurs when everything is slowed down. A great experience if anyone else wants to try it.
What experiments have you lot tried in terms of really turning your head upside-down and gaining a new perspective?

I make that mistake far too frequently

Once you've got your arrangement nailed, mixdown your track in reverse. That way youll focus on the sounds not the placement.

Why do you mean mix down in reverse?

I've actually played around with tempo on my own tracks a lot. I usually just start something at 140, but I got curious one day and played it at 180, 40, 70, all in between. At around 90-75 bpm, 140 bpm percussion sounds so groovy, it's pretty neat.

Reverse the track so it plays backward.

I'm confused, Should I wear my underpants inside out when doing my mix? or master?

Commando for the mastering, only way to know if the bass makes the hair on your scrotum stand up or wither & die.

Honestly, I prefer a lot of my music and tracks slowed down.
Like burial slowed down half a pitch fader has been my groove lately.
It's to the point his catalog sounds weird at its normal tempo now.
On the production side, same thing almost all my tracks get reduced in bpm as one of my final edits.

In college my professor had me do a cool thing with a track cuz i was at a loss for creativity on it. He told me to bounce it down then make two copies of it on other audio channels. The first copy I put up 2 octaves (without repitch on), the second copy I put down one octave, and kept the original at its normal pitch. I then hi-passed the "up 2 octaves" copy, band-passed the normal, lo passed the "down 1 octave," then blended/mixed the 3 tracks. It really twisted and made the track incredibly weird, fun, and got the creative juices flowing.
Def gonna try that playing stuff on different record speeds now
