Long time reader, first time poster
basically we're a duo in New Zealand called "earth is our spaceship" and we completed our first EP about 3 months ago and sent it off to a few labels and and eventually heard back from dubsaw. The dude (his names xzist) was keen and said he'd sign us onto his label, i was communicating with him frequently. He made us fix up a few things which we did and then sent the tracks back. Now after 2 months of solid emailing/ aiming/ facebooking he isn't replying at all!

Is this common with labels? what would be your advice? i told the dude that we may have to start looking for new label if we don't hear back but he still hasnt replied from that, and facebook shows that hes read the message aswell.

assuming your tunes haven't been licensed to the label: sod him and move on.

I wouldnt worry too much about it mate, just keep sending tracks out if the label is really supportive you can see it!

Did you sign anything or give him your finished tracks?

Dubsaw. Not bad. They have releases from Culprate, Funtcase and even a Flux Pavilion remix.

yeah, i was stoked to get on them for a 1st EP. we didn't sign anything so we can look for another label but its soo much work! no one replies at all. even a reply saying were not interested would be nice. haha

man its standard practise trust me, i had it done to me like 2/3 times, reached the contract stage, and then fuck, no contact.

there are many reasons why this could happen, i for one have done it to a one or two artists, when considering them for my label.

basically i came to the conclusion that this guys music was not suitable for th elabel, even though i loved it, which meant i got cold feet, and abandoned the project, yes its cold, and i try to avoid these situations as much as possible but u have to think for yourself, and if ur on the recieving end, its usually a hinter that ur music isnt quite releasable slash suitable for the label- usually one or the other.

so i wouldnt rant here about how shit life is, we've all been there trust.

How to stand a better chance of succeeding in the greasy music bidness:

1) Get everything explicitly in writing.
2) See rule #1.

i take a mild amount of offense as I helped found dubsaw. was a legit label for a while. Things used to run smoothly... vinyl was put out, big artists, big promo, steve vanished for whatever reason and people started bailing (most artists, myself (A+R/Director)) Steve came back, but I think whatever was going on with him is still going on. Couldnt tell you havent talked to him in multiple years.


Guard your tunes, get shit in writing, I'd move on from dubsaw and send them a cease publication letter.

I got numerous mails regarding promises of an EP.
Follow up mails, etc.
I never even sent the tunes to the guys, they came looking for me.
Legit label with some heavy producers signed.

I just chalk it up as one of those things.
If they wanted my music they would have signed it.

you could of just sent a email to the artist explaining what you have here, or you dont think they want or deserve a explanation? and dubstepforum does? lol no need to leave people in the lurch.
