1. Steal a popular songs synths(Wolfgang-Redline, Knife Party Unison Remix)
2. Reverse the audio and change the tempo to the "Trap" tempo
3. Add hi-hats and apply gross-beat + a Kentucky Fried Chicken snare
3. Get legend4ry to put some "dub on the track" and say BADMAHN over and over in -24 pitch.
4. ???
5. Profit

Not a bad plan :lol:

Seriously though, will be interesting to see how they do it and moreover how the landscape of Production board questions will change :lol:

Maybe we can just answer all how do I get vocals questions by linking them to a PDF of the magazine :lol:

You think it's actually gonna work proper? I have a hard time seeing it being that effective, extracting synths seems a bit too optimistic dontcha think?

Interesting nonetheless, if it's any good I'll go pick it up for sure.

Do they still have reader's music? I submitted something before the last issue which didn't have the regular section.

It wont be anywhere near as good as just getting someone in and supplying their own vocals though?! I'm not sold on stripping vocals - seems like a 'hack'

Can't imagine it's anything new, probably a tutorial/article covering the DIY methods we've all discussed time and time again? Maybe a mention of new software like R-Mix and Melodyne DNA.

Trying to take vocals out of a tune is like trying to take eggs from a cake after you have baked it. Most software relies on the vocals being dead centre and uses mid/side processing to isolate them. Usually you end up with horrible artifacts and are also stuck with whatever reverb or other processing is on them.

There is also software out that tries to extract different parts of music from a track - hit n mix tried this but again there were horrible artifacts in the extracted instruments.

Not to say that you can't get good vocals from songs, just that it isn't always easy and requires a good sample and a bit of work.

This isn’t possible, at least not in the way everyone is hoping it’s gonna be. We all know how shitty the quality of a DIY acapella is…. So, even if you could use the same method (provided you have 2 files specific enough to do the phase cancelation to remove the elements you want) for a synth or drums, it’s gonna sound so bad your not gonna be able to use it.

I don’t know how good the Direct Note Access in Melodyne is…. But if it could do this than I’m pretty sure we would have all heard about it before this mag. I know with DNA you can take a clean break and remove a few toms, hats, or whatever and have it work and sound okay. But to remove a synth line from a full blown track.. No way.

Would be cool though, I wouldn’t mind some Spor or Aeph drums.

Seems its phase cancelling using different parts of the same track or instrumentals that they explain. Only had a quick scan on the bus home but I was hoping for more ;_;

it's handy for doing things like fixing (well... almost-fixing) an out-of-tune note in a guitar chord. however, it's really sensitive to harmonics and if you have any sort of reverb, delay etc on it-- you're screwed

Get an instrumental copy of the track and invert the phase, not a new trick.

Haven't seen the mag though so maybe there's something else..

I saw this on a more pretentious forum, and thought it was some kind of joke/ mock up :cornlol:

But Computer Music readers really are just dumb kids, wanting to steal synths from Skrillex tracks :|

This is the only proper way I think. But of course you need that instrumental/acapella.

I'm not sure how I feel about this! :|
I'm sure I'm about to open a whole can of worms but here goes;
It's really useful to know these tools of manipulation, but for the purpose of ripping other peoples works and using them as your own?
"Steal synths from fully mixed tracks, and use them on your own"
Still I bet it makes the magazine sell like hot cakes. It's not like sampling, which is its own recognised art-form, this is a bit more sneaky, and in my opinion shitting on the original artist.

But!
On one hand I have just used a Basement Jaxx 'pella on one of my own tracks (in the sig), and I feel its a fair use for a bootleg that will never be commercially available. But If I were to extract the synth bass from the original lets say and use it on a release of my own its theft.

am I just barking up the wrong tree? I'm going with my gut feeling
