if someone has the money for all that, go for it, but its really not necessary. all you need is a pc with a good soundcard, monitors and a midi controller.

Nothing is necessary...but if everyone is just using the same shit then what's the point...that's completely missing the point IMO. Nothing is REQUIRED, nothing is NECESSARY...you could make Dubstep with a microphone and a minidisc recorder if you had the drive for it, let's be honest. Everything else is just fluff.

I hate conformed standards, this whole cliched fallback response of "well you don't need fancy shit you just need to know what you've got"...yes, this is true but it doesn't apply to EVERY scenario, every thread, every discussion.

It's nice to think outside the box, move away from being stuck in front of a keyboard/monitor all the time...just messing around with thingans. On the MIDI controller gives you the control, hahaha, you may be thinking...but so what? It's like posting a picture of a car on a racetrack and someone saying "oh you could just get a remote controlled one and a decent controller etc etc..." but it wouldn't be THE SAME would it?

Why should the philosphy/approach on this sort of thing (music, FFS, it's an ART no matter what people tell you...1s and 0s not withstanding) be any different?

in fact ill expend, this is (partially) why i dont bother posting much here anymore, everytime a new thread comes up people just chime in, generally in a condescending way, with one of several stock answers, resampling, bitcrushers, read the moneyshot thread, etcetetc, generally by people who have read a lot but have little experience, its really getting very tiresome. It suffocates any new discussion and seems to be done with the desired outcome of looking clever.

also dinsync is phono from doa, proper hardware head and now building his own euro stuff based on teh x0xb0x, great if youve got a euro setup and want the osc and filter but IMO otherwise go for the full x0xb0x, the sequencer is a big part of the fun of the 303/x0x.

im now officially 100%* hardware, no pc or mice or keyboards, just boxes and its awesome.

We can't have run out of topics/discussions, surely? (not counting sound design questions, obv...although these are probably the worse culprit in terms of the above stock responses)

It seems that hardware people always get upset when someone points out that all of this big expensive pile of boxes could fit inside a laptop case. Its not that it doesn't look like fun, just that its expensive and doesn't offer a whole lot of advantages. I.e not very portable, have to set up wiring, hard to sync inside a daw etc.

I've always argued in these threads, i've yet to see a great demo of what hardware can achieve vs software. The only thing i have found is that some cheap softsynths sound weaker in comparison to some good hardware synths. Digital synths can suffer from aliasing, analog synths don't. So i'm thinking of buying a good analog synth, maybe something modular, just so that i have something truly analog to play with.

The old 'if you have the same synths you'll sound like everyone else' argument doesn't hold water - most synths can have millions of different timbres. Just program different sounds to other people, add lots of fx and arrange them differently.

Was wondering how long it'd be before you chimed in on this thread

If your main plus points to not using hardware are the ability to fit in a laptop case, and the fact it can be setup easily, then fair enough, this sort of thing isn't for you.

But as per your comments re; the sound of hardware vs. software...that's the whole point. Hardware doesn't have a squillion different options to it, it generally has less than software (with it's infinitely tweakable parameters). But the hardware still has a unique sound that software can't replicate.

303 vs. Massive
808 vs. Redrum
etc

Hardware has it's unique sound, same as software I guess. But I can spot a Massive tune a mile off, sure a lot of people on here can. Doesn't mean it's not a good tune, it's just that the accessibility of the software (Massive is a great example of this) has watered down the sound to such a level that it's practically devalued it.

You can't really say the same about a 303, or a Moog Prodigy.

you say this without never having tried any of it tho, thats what gets me about these discussions. a qy700 for example, is far more portable than a laptop tbh, no soundcard, usb leads, mice, just a stereo out. instant turn on and off, never crashes, always got the last thing you worked on in memory, etc. these are all advantages.

Paradigm, you might know...in the video I posted above, what's the box in the bottom left of the screen? Is it a MIDI clock/sync, or something else? I notice it's not being touched during the performance...

Well i am looking to get a decent modular analog synth, do any of you hardware people have recommendations?

I'm not knocking hardware, just that its possible to make original sounds in both software and hardware - i'll bet i could make a massive patch that nobody could spot, especially once fx were added and it was put into a mix.

I could use Massive to make a kick drum and I doubt anyone would turn around and say "ooooooo, that's from Massive that is!", so this is a bit of a false argument IMO.

Interesting...he doesn't seem to use the box itself during the video, so am guessing the Octa/Machinedrum have some sort of send/receive function going on...or else he's controlling the parameters directly through one of those two which seems unlikely
