Another track I made. Any helpful hints on getting a good kick and snare, please share.

The kick and snare sounds good to me, however the bass is a bit overpowering.

Midrange totally takes this tune over and makes the other elements almost redundant...could look at the EQing/placement in the mixdown of the midrange to maybe resolve this?

yep, need to compress beats so that I can get a better eq

Why would compressing the beats help with the EQ?

+1 for Wub's statements.
Everything vanishes when the mid-range kicks in.

compressing the kicks allows you to bump up their volume so that they are more prominent and don't take over the whole beat. I have a new track am working on and even when compositing about 10 layers, the kicks are perfect and can be heard throughout the whole song.

Compression shouldn't be your go to tool for this.
You should eq everything to fit in it's own space.
You will just end up muddying the entire frequency range by going overboard rather than being clever with subtractive eq.

Look in the end all music requires space to move like a painting.
If you overdo layers of color you just create a big blotch of Purple or brownish green.
When in the end you were going for a nice blended texture of yellow to blue.
If you get my drift?
Midrange takes up a fair whack of the frequency range and often can compete with the kick and percussion for space.
Scooping out a notch for your snare, hats , etc.
Highpassing the midrange to allow the kick to hit clearly or at the very least slight sidechain compression to the kick.

Yeah, subtractive EQing to give the kick space to breathe in the mix is how I'd do it...though if you've got a technique that you think is working, I'm not suggesting that something is definitely right/wrong.

I just posted a new track in the forums. I am happy with it in my opinion.

Drums are good in this track but you could make some tricks with the kick like reversing one sample and put it on the front of the normal, and you will get a nice puchy efect. As for the snare i would make it a splash, adding some reverb or delay. Chers Bro
