Been looking at maybe getting a dj midi controller.

Have any of you guys got much experience in them or using them? There's loads on the market but I'm getting drawn to the Pioneer DDJ-ERGO mainly coz I just like Pioneer stuff! but it looks a bit hence to carry to clubs.. http://www.djstore.com/item/usbcontroll ... djergo.htm

Or should I just get Serato which will be a more expensive option as I need a new CDJ.

Traktor s2 Been using it for a few months now, I have to say its great. But then again if you have enough money investing in cdjs would probably be a better choice

if you're going with a controller and want a professional package, get the s4 with traktor

If you play out, depending on where you'll play, you will find yourself severely looked down on for using any MIDI controller, even the "Pro" ones like the S4. If you play out a lot I would recommend Serato/ Traktor Scratch if you wanna start using a laptop at gigs. Would be less to carry about with you as well, as I've seen lots of places with all the gear needed for Timecode, you just need to bring your laptop.

cdjs so you can play at clubs on their set up without fannying about with a controller plugging it in and getting it to work.

^^^^yeah that is my favourite. especially as I still buy loads of vinyl. however buying 1210s just for Serato and not vinyl too is pointless

Used to have a Numark Stealth Control with Traktor, was pretty good tbh, really solidly built bit of kit, I never played out with it though, just for fucking about at home/house parties

not getting into that whole controller vs turntable debate, i've tried out several controllers and i can safely say that best by far was numarks NS6. jog wheels feel a lot better than in cheaper plastic controllers and has a great feel to it altogether. having said that i must say i prefer turntables (technics of course) with serato :h:

Hi people, many thanks for the info.

I play out a bit and in an ideal world I'd have technics and Serato but lack of space and money is the problem. Hence I'm selling my gold 1200's.. http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=257887

I hardly have the space for 2 CDJ's and a mixer which was why I was looking at Midi controllers to use at home but get what you are saying about turning up with one at a club but I have seen it done.

I may get a midi controller for home and just use CD's when I play out but that kinda defeats the object a bit as I'll still have to burn loads of CD's.

Oh decisions! Traktor S4 looks pretty cool though.

I used to own Pioneer's ERGO before I sold it and bought an S4 instead. The S4 shits all over the ERGO from a massive height if you ask me. The jog wheels are better constructed, and the sample decks are awesome. The effects in Traktor Pro are great as well, the delay in particular is a favourite of mine.

I've played out with the S4 before. Didn't like it, purely for the hassle of having to set it up, when time was a constraint, and then messing about in the booth finding space for my laptop and controller. Plus you need to keep an eye on it, as carrying about well over a grand's worth of gear attracts the wrong sort of attention. CDs on the other hand are easy to set up, put em in and play! Plus if they get nicked, so what, burn some more. I prefer not having to worry too much about my stuff, so having CDs allows me to focus on the mix and not looking after my gear.

Good point regarding taking laptop, controller etc to play out. I tend to hang around when playing out and getting lean so probably not the best idea for me!

rookie question since I'm completely new to serato but can you use just one cdj to control both decks, one at a time? Or do you have to have two real cdjs for two serato decks?

I keep looking at these as a cheap/smalller setup way to mess about mixing at home but there is either really cheap ones on ebay (like 70-100) or the mega bucks 700+ setups.

Guess thats how it goes with decks aswell really.

I'm swinging towards a Denon MC3000 now

The Reloop one comes with Serato intro which is a bit limited.
