Finally NI have released an exspansion pack that isn't intended for either Hip Hop or Techno. It looks quite interesting. Apparently the kits are made up half of samples and half Massive patches which means it could be quite CPU intensive.

I'm not sure if I'm goin to get it, I'm going to have to have a listen to the demos first. It would be quite nice to have an alternative to Venganece for my drum samples.

Anything can make anything.
Dubtep sample packs are stupid.

That's a bit of a silly thing to say. Like it or not, there are trends in the types of sounds used in various genres of music and it's helpful to have sample packs geared towards those trends.

Also, you need forms of categorisation so that you can locate the right sound for the job quickly and easily. It's no use having one big sample folder saying "Kicks" or patch folder saying "Bass" as you'll be there for ever trying to find the right sound for your track.

Nothing silly about my statement.
I'm fairly clued up on these sorts of things.
I use any sample pack to make any type of music.
It's all about what you do with the samples.

Yes you can, and great things can often come from using samples originally intended for other purposes.

But you seemed to be arguing that categorising something by genre is "stupid". I'm arguing that it isn't, because it allows you to keep your sample library organised and allows you to locate sounds and patches quickly and easily.

Doesn't work like that for me is all I'm saying.
Might be helpful for someone but in the end searching through a Dubstep sample pack to make Dubstep can actually be counter intuitive.

Fair enough, everyone has their own way of working.

One final thought from me on why labelling sample packs this way is useful, is that it gives the customer an idea of what to expect from the product. If I buy a sample pack labeled "Dubstep" then I would expect a bunch of synthetic "tuned Tom+ white noise" snares, some heavy subby kicks and a bunch of wobble/growl/screech patches (going by today's trends). I wouldn't expect a bunch of Chris Liberator 303 acid techno bass lines. So labels like this will allow me to purchase the sounds i'm looking for.

Fair enough.

Comes down to personal preference I guess.
When I'm making some sub heavy Dubstep I generally go for Dark Ambient stuff.
I use loop packs labeled in that vein but not in a particular style of music.
I would even go as far as saying I would want some Chris Liberator 303 acid techno bass lines.

But I shouldn't have got into this discussion as it is very open ended and entirely up to preference.

What's the alternative then? Naming your sample packs stuff like 'Steve' and 'Randy' and just throwing in different sounds at random? I dunno about you but I wouldn't buy that lol. You need some sort of general idea of what it's going to be at least.

Also you said that you tend to go for dark ambient stuff which means you are indeed looking for a certain category, just that it isn't dubstep. So, yeah.

That's my point.
Label it by feeling but not by style is what I'm saying.

I guess I'm just getting tired of everyone asking how do I make Dubstep when they forget it is very similar to so many other styles of music.

Yeah, I see your point. Unfortunately though from a marketing perspective I think that's probably asking a little too much from your customers. Although, stuff like separating Vengeance Electro kicks and Vengeance Dubstep kicks is definately a bit retarded haha.

don't buy maschine packs
Maschine is an awesome softsampler/controller combo
but the packs are all dog shit. I've bought one and checked out a couple, trust me it's worthless shit. Just use it with your own samples
and i don't know who out there is launching massive from Maschine but they're either playing live or they need to get a DAW
beecause it's seriously a great sampler but this whole all-encompasing production box label they put on it is bollox
you can't record/scrub audio in maschine. Its sequencer is strictly a midi sequencer.

I'm sure loads of people are using massive in machine seeing how it comes free now and the knobs are automatically mapped on the full maschine controller (So i'm told, I have the mikro which has no knobs)

Exactly my thoughts...dubstep is kind of an offspring of a number of different genres. Any dubstep sample pack is so cliche and poser status it's ridiculous. It's actually better to use the farthest from dubstep for samples so it may sound a tad more original.
